The Roseville Presbyterian Church has started a monthly Afrikaans service on the 1st Sunday of the month at 18:00 Afterwards we usually stand around and chat, sometimes with some koeksisters... Hi all. First time posting to this forum. Me and my wife started the process a few days ago. We are using New World Immigration. We have been doing a lot of research obviously, but one thing we are still worried about is how our 3 and 4 year old sons (afrikaans speaking) will adapt to an English speaking environment, especially in school. Has anybody struggled with this? Regards Gerhard

My family emigrated when I was fairly young. Afrikaans was my first language but it is pretty basic. I go on trips to SA quite regularly so looking for a tutor to help me get my skills up to scratch! Any help would be much appreciated!

We have only been here in Australia for 9 months but I already feel that my Afrikaans is deteriorating. I would also love for my children to be able to speak Afrikaans. I can teach them everything that they need to know but would love for them to be able to complete some sort of examination to prove that they are fluent in "Die Taal". Are there any organization in Australia that offers some sort of formal tuition in Afrikaans?

Hi all. One of our degrees was awarded in Afrikaans at Tukkies (obviously a while back!). Since the application for Aus has to be in English, we need to perform a translation somewhere. Has anyone had a similar situation and how did you resolve it? Hi All We're planning to move from Sydney's Eastern Suburbs to either ST IVES, CHERRYBROOK, WAHROONGA OR HORNSBY. One child in primary school and one in high school. Our son that''s in high school still struggles with the english language as he's only been in Aus a couple of months, thus our focus will be to find a GOOD PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL (due to financial constraint we cannot consider a private school) for him. I currently work in Mosman, thus PEAK TRAFFIC TO AND FROM MOSMAN will play a role and we would prefer a 3 bedroom house (that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to rent) in an area where there's AFRIKAANS SPEAKING SOUTH AFRICANS (our main aim is to seek an area where our teenage son can feel at home - he is from the Free State and is experiencing a bit of culture shock at the moment). My husband works in the St Marys area, thus somewhere in the middle of St Marys and Mosman will be ideal. Anyone able to give me advice on where to move to?

Hi All, We are new to the forum and we are about to submit our expression of interest letter and all of a sudden all these questions that we've been holding back on are bubbling to the surface. By God's grace we will hopefully land by end 2015. I'm worried about my eldest who is in grade 4 this year. Would any of you recommend extra English lessons prior to our departure? Or any extra classes to assist with the conversion from Afrikaans to English schooling? Please share any of your experiences? Thanks! -

Hi My divorce decree from my previous marriage is in Afrikaans, as issued by the South African High Court. How do I go about getting this translated into English or getting an English version? If I need a translator, can anyone recommend a few in Cape Town? Thanks! Lorraine

Ek wil graag by julle weet. Ons trek vanaf afrikaanse platteland na die stad, maar immigreer eers oor drie jaar. Plaas ek vir sus (tans Graad1 in Afrikaanse plattelandse skool) volgende jaar (Graad 2) in 'n Engelse skool in die stad of 'n Afrikaanse skool? Ek en hubby het gedink engels om vir die Aus aanpassing voorsiening te maak, maar ons kry sterk teenkanting van vriende en familie en onderwysers. Maar hulle weet nie van die immigrasie planne nie. Ek verstaan kinders in stad word eintlik tweetalig groot, maar sy gaan in elk geval ontwrig word in onderrig taal, so hoekom nie nou al nie? Ek wil graag 'n ingeligte besluit neem en soek raad asb.
