We're going to Brisbane initially.  We have a good friend there (met on Contiki years ago) that is housing us and also has a spare car we can use.  That alone will make it much much simpler for us as we don't have to commit to renting a place until I find work.

I know many people have said that Melbourne and Sydney are the places to be for IT work, but I've spoken to a couple of guys that have worked in Brisbane and they reckon I'll be fine.

Haha @ChrisH you sound just like us! Our plan was to settle in Brisbane. We also had good friends, who we stayed with for free and were using as a base while we searched for jobs. I must say it was great having 2 weeks of accommodation with family and friends along the way, and think that's a good idea to have a base that is cost free and also with familiar faces to help with the admin & show around town.

BUT then my husband got a great job offer in Sydney, and now we are here instead. Not what we planned, but we followed the work. Stressing about securing a decent and affordable rental is quite intense, so can't imagine having that plus the stress of looking for work. So best to stay with your friends for as long as you are able to (and they are happy to :P), you can always use that as a base to apply to jobs all over the East Coast like we did. Obviously hope you get work in your first choice city, Brisbane.

All the best! Agree that you should just do it... with everything going on especially, I think it will be more stressful waiting it out. Travel plans for the wedding can be made later on and can be an excuse for a first visit back to SA... G luck!

I think being open to ending up in a different city is probably the best of both worlds!

Its actually not as bad as you think... Sure I have heard horror stories... but if you speak good english, don't cook smelly food each night (e.g. curries) and can comfortably afford the place you should be good.

It all comes down to convincing the agent you will happily pay your rent for years to come and give him/her few headaches. Each agent manages a large number of properties... so they get nervous when you can't speak english or work in a very specialised field. .

Hahaha thanks @monsta! Well since I last wrote - we got our application for a rental in Sydney accepted today, so we are THRILLED! We had heard so much about how hard it was, expensive, competitive (heaps of other people at each inspection), but oddly enough this hasn't been the case for us (well it is obviously expensive in Rands terms and probably in comparison to the other cities, but salary accomodates this). Maybe its the time of year (going out of summer), but we had the choice of 2 places we loved and applied for getting accepted, and we've chosen the one that has our heart. We have 2 small kiddies so the longer term the better, and these owners seem happy with longer the better, yay!

Huge stress relief! Now I relax with the kids and we see the sights. Sydney is beautiful, we are just so happy to be in Australia. Perhaps honeymoon period, who knows, but this country is amazing and we are getting stuck into things. Must say it seems that people here are much more relaxed and wonder why us South Africans worry so much. My husband's good friend in Newcastle couldn't understand why we were so stressed. You will get a job. You will get a place to live. As they say, "No worries"

Holy sh!t is all I can say. I've never seen anything like this. At light speed your life gets wrapped up into barely identifiable shapes, hour by hour.

Yes keep moving otherwise they'll wrap you next.  It's really fascinating (and clever) how they do it.

Wanted to say: "what the hell Chris? - I don't need further freaking out!!"

but I won't - it might sound rude on the forum :P

Is all done now?

Who are you with again?

It's a wonderful country. We managed to get our medicare sorted. All the locals warned us about how terrible it would be, but I personally found everybody helpful and friendly!

On another note, all 3 of us fell sick with a stomach bug. Will hopefully feel better tomorrow.
