Hey Kirsten

We figured we'd try Melbourne for a bit - we found it quite exciting, so we'd give it a try while we're younger and maybe move to Brisbane when we're a tad older? Also found some cool areas that wuld suit us perfectly, 10 minutes from beach, max 35 min commute, pretty good schools. :)

Hahaha!!!
We (myself and GenDemo, writer of the "Venter blog", hehehe...) are sending our stuff with Crown Relocations, and we are flying with Qantas, via IOM booking (40kg+7kg each). Staying in AirBnb accommodation the first 3 months, in Belgrave/Selby. At this stage (two weeks before the move) just about all our stuff has been sorted. We have a few small things left this side, but fortunately we have family who are willing to help us with it, so no panic there. (Like selling a 10 year old VW Polo, with
105 000km. Odd, but there it is.) Our banking has been sorted. We've just tried out Fx Capital, and are very satisfied with the results. We have both checked online, and according to SARS we are 100% tax compliant, they even refunded us a few bucks. We've just renewed our RSA driver's licenses, they expire in a few months, so better safe than sorry, and my in-laws will pick them up for us in 6 weeks.( We got our Vic driver's licenses last year during our activation trip.) Major things left to do: clean the stuff we're taking (no use doing it too early, they are building all around us, so it's just going to get dusty again). I still need to hand in the final version of my M dissertation, after the corrections from recommendations from the external examiners. And...oh yeah, my best friend is getting married next Saturday!!! Yay!!!

Pheew!!! **Just remember to breathe....**

Good luck @Sassyninja !!!

Would it be better to buy jackets there? Are they warmer, and reasonable or crazy expensive?

Sassy it all depends what you are looking for really. There are lots of stores where you can buy jackets but I wanted a layered jacket like a 3 in 1 type. You really need one of those here. They have specialist stores like Northface here but the jackets are very expensive, more so than SA. When we went back to SA in December I went to Cape Union Mart and bought a 3 in 1. Also bought some thermal underwear for hubby. I paid R1900 for my jacket but it will last me for years im sure. I wish Id have bought a body warmer too. They do have them in Target though but not the same quality and warmth as Cape Union. Buy gloves and scarves too. The problem with Melbourne is the wind chill factor.

Your little girl is going to love kindergarten. My son wakes up everyday eager to go, he has really thrived being there and teachers are wonderful. On Monday they are organising an afternoon tea just for mums, really looking forward to that. The kindergartens are not zoned remember, I am fortunate that my sons Kinder is just a 5 minute walk away. It's the best feeling being able to walk my son that's all I ever wanted. ?

Yeah I noticed kindergartens in VIC not the same as part of yhe schools in Brisbane. Thanks for that info, I almosttt bought a duck feather jacket for R1500 at Cape Union on the weekend, it folds into a little bag like a n umbrella, would that work?

I can second buying jackets in SA. We went on a 6 week trip around USA in dec/jan and skied in -10 in our First Ascent gear (lots and lots of layers) and were fine. Everyone said we were crazy to buy in SA as we would find better quality and lower prices in USA and I have to say we weren't sorry we kitted up in SA stuff as to buy the same quality as First Ascent or K-way was much more expensive. With the rand so weak it should be cheaper in South Africa.

Just be mindful as to whether the fabric is waterproof if buying down jackets.

I would suggest something with high wool content and that is wind proof  - not a Melton jacket (if they even sell those anymore they have too much polyester in them)

Hi Sassy, you can buy jackets for kids also at Cape Union Mart. Their range for kids starts at ages 2-3 3-4 etc. Bear in mind you can order online at Cape Union Mart or if the store where you are doesn't have a particular jacket you want or size you can order it in. That's what we did for my husbands jacket. I am not sure I would spend a fortune on kids jackets, I say this simply because they grow out of them so quickly. You can get a good decent jacket that will keep him/her warm without spending alot. Try Ackermans, Woolworths, I am sure that by now they will have winter stock in. It is cold in Melbourne but certainly not below zero, so youre not going to freeze. :-)

Also check out Target here is what I found online. Not bad prices either.

I have found that alot of the kids clothes here to be cheaper or very close to what we paid in SA.

I would have also suggested ALDI as they are having a special on snow gear but that is in May and you are not in Melbourne til July.

Hope you find this useful :-)

I'd recommend something like this for winter in Melbourne - padded with a hood

Kathmandu is pricey but they have great sales.

For Adults, It's probably spending big and getting something that will last (you will need it every winter).

For growing kids - I don't spend more than $30 per child, per season.

Hi,

I haven't been on the blog for a while, nice to see everyone's plans are moving along.

I am joining this thread.  Hubby is leaving for Sydney the first week of July and we will be joining him at the end of the month.

I am stressed out already but really excited!

Good luck everyone.

P.S.  I saw some really nice jackets for little ones at Cape Union Mart.  Waterproof and warm.

We (my wife and I) will also be moving to Melbourne in July... Should be landing around the 18th odd and I will be starting work on the 1st of August.

Still need to book our flights and get all the details sorted, but starting to get really excited.

Welcome, welcome!

Anyone taking half a container? If so, who with and when? We'd be keen to share?
