Sassyninja
Hi guys How long did it take you to find a job in IT? And where are you? Thanks in advance!
SurferMan
Hi @Sassyninja, How long is a piece of string? Depends on state, market, job type, demand etc etc. You get the picture. Try to remodel your profile into the current trends, but never lie about your abilities. Best wishes! Surferman
HadEnoughofJuju
@SurferMan 2xy is the answer to that question. @Sassyninja As SurferMan says, it largely depends on you speciality. I found that in Aus you have to have experience and qualifications in a specific field as apposed to South Africa where the broader your knowledge and skills are the better. I have skills that span hardware, software, development in both standard software and web based technologies as well as networking and several other areas and here that makes it difficult. It will be easier to find work in places like Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane because they have relatively large IT industries as well as better salaries. From the time I applied for my first job to actually getting it was about three days. I was just very lucky and in the right place at the right time. SurferMan
And just to make it harder for you.. I have skills like HEOJJ across, hardware, software, networks, business functions etc and that is regarded as highly desirable in my line. (Solution Architect) Best wishes! BrendanH
@Sassyninja I am a software engineer specializing in .NET and I had three offers on the table within 2 weeks of my first application. This is in Canberra. It seems to me that hard work and preparation pays off here in Aus so be prepared to spend hours doing research into companies and people, writing cover letters/selection criteria, and brushing up on the skills they ask for so that you can answer technical questions.
Sassyninja
WOW - OK - so for most of you its been quite quick. The reason I asked is 1. I'm trying to budget for cover for when we arrive. and 2. My husband and I are both in IT, I'm Systems Analyst / Technical Business Analyst (with SQL and reporting background) and my husband is a Solutions Architect (SQL Ninja ) but specialising in Logistics and Supply Chain software.... I put his CV onto Seek about 3 weeks ago and havent heard a thing. Wondering if that will improve once we're on Aussie soil??
EmNew
It does appear to hinge around specialization and demand, and being in the right place at the right time...... Hubby is an analyst developer in OpenEdge and he went from landing on Monday, interviewed that Thursday , hired that Friday. He did contact an agent specializing in recruiting his skill-set whilst still in RSA, so that helped focus the job search.
Sassyninja
Excellent - so glad to hear, for now we've budgeted for 4 months to find something. Seems like it should be enough. *touchwood*
BIGSHARK
EmNew, if you don't mind me asking but what was the name of the agent specializing in recruiting your husbands skill-set whilst still in RSA ?
SurferMan
@Sassyninja You both have in demand skills. Does you hubby do any SCM/Logistics in SAP? You say he is a Solution Architect, so am I but my skills span the entire business, and I also go down to OS/DB/Infra/SOA/integration/ESB. Happy to give some pointers. One of the big things is to rewrite your CV's to a more Aussie format. POM me if you want to see my LinkedIn profile. Oh yes, make sure your LinkedIn and CV match 100%.
Sassyninja
Hi Surferman - thanks that would be great, I have updated both of our Linkedin profiles. I see SAP is BEEEG in Oz. Unfortunately neither of us have SAP skills. Will PM you. Thanks so much!
Sassyninja
P.S. we have both experience in many areas in retail, such as Marketing, QA, planning systems etc. Hubby and I have also both worked in financial service companies before as well. SurferMan
There are a ton of free courses and Youtube videos on SAP. Yes the SAP Certification is expensive, but worth it.
Sassyninja
Thanks Surferman, will look into that, just finding time at the moment with planning a move, working and trying to sell our house - so will have to be put on hold. Btw - met with recruiters in Melbourne and Brisbane and Melbourne should take up to 3 weeks for a job in IT and Brisbane about a month.

Hi @Sassyninja, can you share some of these recruitment companies so that i can get in touch with them whilst i am still in SA. Thanks
Sassyninja
Hi Yuvi In Brisbane I met with Matt at Robert Half recruiters. And in Melbourne with a guy that used to be a Talent Aquisition professional but now working in project management so that may not help. I can tell you that SEEK and Linkedin are the ways to go. I believe that on Seek though they will only contact you once you're on Australian soil as most of the jobs listed on there are serious and they are looking for someone almost immediately.
