NickiD
Hi everyone Just wanting to get some insight (and opinion) around schools in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney, which is where we're thinking of getting ourselves settled - close to family. We have a couple of public schools in mind after looking at the Better Schools site. We're at a subsidised government school now in Joburg, so happy to stick with the public schooling system to begin with at least. What I want to ask is: do we automatically get into one of these schools if we find a rental in the area, or is there still a selection process? What is the right way to go about this? House first and then school, or school and then house, to get into the right area? Would I need to get hold of the schools directly? Ideally, we'd like to get to Sydney in late December/early January to get our two boys settled before starting school in January. Help please! AFreshStart
How old are your kids? For the most part primary schools are not selective, some high schools are, like Sydney Boys and Girls High Schools. If you fall in the school zone of a public school they have to take you. It's a bit early now to be contacting schools, but you do want to do it by November. Schools break for holidays in late November and only open up in late Jan, so you'll want to let them know you are wanting to attend before hand and do the paperwork when they reopen in January. We picked school first, then house, paying a fortune in rent, but now that we are in and settled are looking to buy within the zone, but out of the area we currently live in.Hope that helps!CheersMatt Edited February 18, 2015 by AFreshStart
Riekie
Best is to get yourself here, go visit a few schools, decide on one and enroll your child. If you live (rent or buy) within the school's zoning, they have to take you if it is a public school. You could narrow it down online before you come over, but my personal experience was that it was basically mission impossible to pick a school online. Do the legwork and take your kids with you. These are the top public schools in Sydney:http://bettereducation.com.au/school/Primary/nsw/sydney_top_government_primary_schools.aspxThis is the Good Schools Guide:http://www.goodschools.com.au/?gclid=CKyDm9246sMCFZcjvQodDyMAYAYou're looking at schools in Darlinghurst, Darling Point, Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay, Watson Bay, Rose Bay, Vaucluse, Point Piper.
