tersiava
Hi everybodyWe are planning to migrate to Sydney in January 2014, and I would like to know what the process is to enrol my child at a high school? Is it like in RSA where we have to enrol a long time in advance? Do we need a special letter or something from the Immigration department?Do we need anything from the current school? Can we do it online from here?ThanksTersia
Drought
Hi Tersiavado you intended using the public school system or the private/independent system? That may guide the answers you receive.

Heymanse
We arrived in the middle of the year and just went to the local high school to enrol our 2 kids. We met up with the principal a day after the school started again and she had a short interview with each of them (in my presence) and was told that they could start the following week and in the meantime choose their subjects. My son was pushed to Year 7 (which is high school level here) and my daughter then started Year 10.I took the report cards with me to the interview but the principal didn't even look at them. I got the impression that the principals of schools want to interview the kids here personally, so I don't think it is something you would want to do if you're not here yet. You would like to check out the school first anyway I suppose. Edited October 3, 2013 by Heymanse
Willa
It is not anywhere as easy to enrol your child in Oz as in SA.Firstly it depends on the type of school you would want to enrol them in. Private of Public. Public schools usually have catchment areas and you can't apply before you have an address within that area. Once you have a fixed address you contact the school and make arrangements for enrolment, after interviews and all relevant documentations were received you will be contacted as to whether your application were successful. Public schools have no catchment areas but sometimes you will find that they don't have immediate places, you can go to the schools and get an application form, interviews and school tours will be given and once all documentation were received you will be contacted.
