Used car dealers in Adelaide

Hi Adelaidians

When we land in Adelaide in Sept, we want to try and buy a car as soon as possible to at least have one to do the stuff that will just be easier with a car (also easier with a baby).

Is there an area of Adelaide that is known for used car dealerships? Like I know in Johannesburg, you just drive down Main Reef Road and you will see stacks of used car dealerships. Is there such an area in Adelaide?

Also, what do you need to buy cash. Do you need to have a SA drivers license or will my RSA license do? Do you need to take out insurance before you drive of the lot, the way I had to in the USA?

Thanks

Erik

There are used car dealers all over the place..and a lot of saffers in them as well. Dependant on where you are staying ask around and you will get recommendations. You just use your ZAR license although it is better to have an SA one because then the car dealer does the transfer and everything for you. On a ZAR license you have to go do it yourself. Not a big issue but just helps as one less thing to do. Then again you can do it at the same time as you convert your licenses if you want so one visit. You don't have to take out insurance but the dealer can usually organize insurance for you at a fair deal with a rating 1...pays to ask. You will probably not drive it out immediately as they usually "get it ready" for you by doing full checks and stuff like that so you can get a quote on insurance and then shop around if you like. Always ask for best price and negotiate with them. They will probably cut a bit off the price and say 3 months rego. Try push for at least a years rego. There is always room to improve. If you are really interested, push them a bit more and go to walk out and say it's not really good enough and you are paying cash so you will have to think about it. Of course sometimes works better on a car for 20k then it does on a 5k car LOL.
