Miss Piggy
Guest Noeks
Hey guys, do any of u know where I can get hold of caramel condensed milk here in Perth? Or do I have to boil the tins of condensed milk (like in the old days.... ) - and if so, how long do I boil the tin for on the stove top? So lank laas gedoen, that I'v forgotten I remember doing it as a teen (boiling the tin) and forgetting it on the stove top - the water boiled dry and it exploded all over my mum's spotless kitchen walls and tiles and ceiling .... don't want a repeat.... Bianca S
I made the Caramel/Ideal Milk Pep Choc tert over Christmas, yummie! I found that if you use any biscuit with coconut in, its almost the same as Tennis beskuitjies. I used Mint Aero on top. The SA shops do have it here, but whenever you want to make something, you dont have in stock at home, you know what I mean? Am also going to try that choc tert. Dankie!! Hi, you boil it about 2 1/2 to 3 hours on low to medium heat, turn halfway (makes a difference). I always boil more than one and keep the others for later, yummie on choc cake! Mara
Hi NoeksI get mine at Safeway or Coles, it is usually where the long life milk is on the shelves, if not there, just ask for caramel condensed milk, I have always been able to get it from my local supermarket.Hi PoeksieYou cannot use scotch fingers, it would never work, but you can try something called tea biscuits, or marie biscuits. Replace the Orley Whip with normal cream, same thing, you must still beat the cream to stiffen it. As far as the peppermint crisps are concerned, all the supermarkets here in Melbourne sell them, just the wrapping is different. Also what I do is crush the biscuits, mix them with butter (I never use margerine) and press them into your pie dish, it works like a dream. Once you have made your tart you place it in the fridge to set for a couple of hours. If you do it this way, the scotch fingers may even work. Guest Noeks
Thanx a lot, Mara & Bi.UK - will try Coles first .... never quite got over the caramel plastered all over the kitchen fiasco!! I have been craving caramel for months now - just want to eat it out of the tin in spoon fulls! Then I'll add it to the cakes / tarts....!! The Parsons Family
Hi NoeksI have definitely seen caramel condensed milk in Coles in Innaloo shopping centre. Apparently the Arnott's Rice Cookies taste just like tennis biscuits (according to Lawrence). The Peppermint Crisp is not as good but it will do the trick.I love this dessert ... Annette
Hi everyoneUnfortunately the caramel condensed milk here is not like the stuff in SA. It's thin and runny (basically, caramel flavoured condensed milk instead of caramalised condensed milk) instead of thick and set like the "other" stuff. It is widely available though. Also, Orley Whip or similar is not available. I find Anzac biscuits work really well for any fridge tart recipes instead of tennis biscuits. SASydneysider
Hi Dedrei,This is a no flop milk tart. I've made it many MANY times and have never had a flop! This recipe doubles well too. I must add, I tend to tweek the recipe, but that's me. I will follow any recipe once and once I've tasted it, will think it needs a bit more of this or a bit more of that and that's how the 'tweeking' starts. I always vow to make notes with the recipe so when I've tweeked it sufficiently, I have the perfect recipe. This never happens!1 Tin condensed milk3 Tins of milk (use the empty condensed milk tin)1 Egg2 Heaped table spoons cornflower (Maizena in South Africa and I use White Wings in Aus)1 Heaped table spoon custard powderFew drops of lemon essence Few drops of almond essence(I don't like lemon essence so I use vanilla. Vanilla can be substituted for the Almond as well)Tennis biscuits (I've used Marie biscuits)Method:Mix condensed milk with 1 tin milk and heat slowly till boiling point.Beat 2 tins milk plus all the other ingredients and add to first mixture beating continuously until thick.Pour over biscuits and sprinkle with cinnamon.Let me know how you go.SASPS: How do I get single line spacing when I press Enter once only and double line spacing when I press Enter twice? Dedrei
How do I get single line spacing when I press Enter once only and double line spacing when I press Enter twice? I have no idea what you mean?
Bianca S
Dreamcatcher
As jy dit wil bruin hê gooi bietjie kleursel by. Jy kan ook 'n bietjie karamelgeursel bygooi as jy wil.
