To operate a bank account, you need a Tax File Number (TFN) and here's how you get one: (Note: you don't need a TFN to OPEN an account, but until you have one, your inteterest won't be paid over)Go to www.ato.gov.au (The home page of the Australian Taxation Office)Click on "for individuals"on the top left of the pageClick on "apply for tax file number" in the drop-down menu (it's below "More")Follow the prompts, complete your info & you're done.You will receive a temporary reference number and your TFN will be mailed to the address supplied on your application within 10 days.
