Queensland Girl
On 17 April 2005 Qld Premier Peter Beattie announced the creation of the Queensland Academies, an innovative alternative educational program for the best and brightest students as part of the Smart State Strategy. The Smart State Strategy is critical to the future of Queensland as a prosperous, vibrant and socially progressive state. There are three Academies:Established 2007Academy for Science Mathematics and Technology (Grade 10-12) ToowongAcademy of Creative Industries (Grade 10-12) Kelvin GroveAcademy of Health Sciences (Grade 10-12) Griffiths University Campus Gold CoastQueensland University,Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University are involved in the project by providing advanced placement for students, sharing facilities and providing tertiary teaching staff.www.qldacademies.eq.edu.auI have found this development interesting as it is a state government being "not politically correct".Positions at the Academy are offered to students who pass a rigorous 4 hour entrance exam ( IQ test) and a personal interview with a panel of judges. This is $150 million dollar investment by the state government in the future. These are STATE schools. The students pay a minimal fee. With all the discussion on "dumbing down" and slipping standards , It is gratifying to know that if you have a smart kid, your smart kid will have the most amazing opportunities and assistance to fullfill their potential, irrespective of YOUR financial situation.
