Duur dagsorg

Dagsorg vir 'n kind in Suid-Afrika is gemiddeld R1500 per maand? (Ek is nie seker nie, want my kinders is nie in dagsorg nie).

Ek betaal my bediende meer vir minder ure in 'n week.

Stem saam dat my kind baie meer as 'n aardse besitting werd is!

You must remmber that in Australia if you got a job looking after Childen you would expect to earn a living wage and you will earn a decent wage you can not really begrudge the cost of child care knowing that you would certainly not do the job for a unrealistically low salary.

but i do agree it is a big choice of is it worth it to go back to work or to stay home till the kids go to school.

Ek betaal $61.50 per kwartaal vir my seuntjie in laerskool in Melbourne. Daar is duidelik 'n groot verskil.

looks about right... For my 3 kids, daycare would have been $3250 per month...

Its ludicrous.

If you've got PR you can get a rebate on that, but with both parents earning engineering salaries, we're at the wrong end of the scale for any rebate to make much of a difference when we get our PR.

That's why we went the Au Pair route. That's about $1200 a month, and she's around most of the time. Its still expensive compared to daycare in RSA, but much cheaper than the alternatives here...

Well, almost... you could get your kids a day pass on the bus and leave them touring the city for $7.50 a day... That works outs to about $160 a month. Just pack in their lunch and a book to read. :ilikeit:

lol - I might just do that

Where do you stay and how did you decide on which au pair to use. I also considered it but do not know where to start looking for one. Do you know of any good agencies that I can contact.

Groete

Anita

Hi there,

Do the kids start "school" at 5 years old in Oz? As I wanna try and work out when the AUD 1000 per month will stop and proper school will take over at a much cheaper rate (PR visa). Yes I also love my job here in SA but I will not work when we get to Oz provided hubbie can support us until my little one starts school. By the way a friend of mine gets an approx 30% rebate on her kids "play group fee". She does not work but allows her son to play at the local community centre 3 times a week for which she pays.

Antoinette,

Ek dink jy moet dit in perspektief sien.

Dankie,

Tania

Hi Tania,

Michelle,

I stay in Perth.

We did a search for au pair on the interweb and came up with a number of sites. you can register for free on all of them, but if you want to actually contact anyone, then you need to pay registration. We chose one site which we liked the most (personal preference really) paid the registration and contacted a couple of the au pairs. Once we found one we liked and that liked us, we contacted references and her parents, and eventually she jumped on a plane and now she's here.

In choosing, I guess you need to look at what they enjoy - ie are they party animals and like eating out? have they travelled the world? Can they speak english (they're gonna influence how your kids talk / write / etc)? We found some who come from fairly wealthy families and have expectations of the host family eating out often, going on regular site seeing tours etc etc etc. If that's your lifestyle, then great, but if not then it could be a mismatch of expectations.

I guess other things to look out for are religion, smoking, alergies, how long they can stay (3m to 1y), who is paying for flights, etc etc etc... At the end of the day, I guess one needs to trust God, take the plunge and hope you get someone who fits in well with the family and who can meet the objectives of having an au pair...

We looked at agencies, but found it to be more expensive - obviously they take a cut of the contract amount. Hence going through the website may be more risky, though it doesn't need to be.

I can't remember all the sites, they're on my home PC, but the one we used is www.newaupair.com. there is also www.greataupair.com. There are 3 or 4 others, including one dedicated to Australia.

Hope that helps.

Rich

My son is 4 turning 5 this year and he goes to Kindy two days a week. Next year he goes to year 0 five days a week. then he starts "real school" when he turns 7. but his birthday is in the latter half of teh year. My youngest daughter's birthday in June and starts the whole process a year earlier - ie kindy when she turns 4, year 0 when she turns 5 and real school when she turns 6.

hope that helps.

  • 1 month later...

Ek betaal R880 per maand vir my seuntjie hy is nou amper 4.

:ilikeit:

Guys,

For this amount of money, an au pair is really a bargain and I believe worth considering. It means your kid is at home, so you can keep an eye on things, but also you have an extra set of hands to help. Also you have "day care" from early til late as you require it, but typically 40 hours a week, which is more than you get at normal day care. And you can go out for an evening if you want...

We've found there are a lot of graduate teachers that want to take a few months to a year off before working, and this is great as they can also help with teaching your kid the basics.

Just my 2 cents (again)

cheers

What are the average hours for day care in Aus? Is it traditional work hours i.e. +- 7-8 hours?

Do some of the day care facilities offer long-day care? If yes, do the child minder then charge an additional fee?

It differs from place to place.

The school my kids go to ask $275/child/week from 7:30 - 17:30 and $310 from 7:00 - 18:00. $30 per 30min per carer penalty if you are late. Other schools have a flat rate $290 per child per week 7:00 - 18:00.

So it depends - and this is just for Melbourne. Other states might be different.

Cheers

 That is a lot of money. It's not difficult to see why lots of Aussie moms abandon their careers to raise kids. When I pass cafes in the morning they are all filled with prams & moms in tracksuits. The next set of babyboomers here in Victoria are expanding and childcare facilities are cashing in... unfortunately.

Hi All,

I can definately relate and also say that daycare is very expensive.

My daughter is luckily in GRade 2 now and will start Year 3 in AUS early next year.

But my son is turning 3 now and will have to go to daycare as both my husband and I have careers.

Recently when I visited AUS I went to visit a day care centre : ABC very very nice. Well for the price I suppose it has to be.

But I heard of something else that is scaring me a bit Kindi!

How does this work and how do kids get there as it seems to be at different timeslots?

Thanks

T
