Ok you all, now I've got memories!

Anyone remember the Dev - Devonshire hotel in Braamfontein

There was also a nice little downstairs place in Braamfontein where the musso's could jam and you could buy banana bread and they sold beer under the counter so to say.

Someone mentioned the Radium beer hall, its the only pub i have ever come across that sold boiled eggs

Rand easter show at the old show grounds.......

Hi Desv

Yep, when I worked in Braamfontein the guys used to hang out at the Devonshire for drinks. I worked with a whole lot of guys, was just about the only girl appart from the two receptionists. In those days PC's were still huge and the company I worked for was training "computer engineers" had to do a huge test to be accepted. They didn't think a woman could be logical. I was damn good at it a well! Even fixed the compputers at the JHB Stock exchange!!!

Ja, and then I got married and had children and the rest is just memories!

There was this little underground place close to the Chelsey in Hillbrow where we used to go, the played "al fresco" Jazz etc, it was also one of the multi racial places that popped up those years, I'm talking 81. We used to have lots and lots of Irish Coffee.

What about the Bella Nopoli!?!?!

The indoor pool in Hillbrow?

The hippy fleamarket down stairs?

What happened to the Clay Oven on the corner of Witkopen and Main Roads?

Do you remember the Fourways Hotel (?) in ... just can't remember the road's name!!!? Just remembered, William Nicol. It was later called the Indaba Hotel. Used to go there on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. Drinking outside under the trees and listening to live music. Is the Indaba still there?

Hele gaar hoenders by Fontana as jy vrek honger was 3 uur in die more.

Die swembad by Riebeeck meer in Randfontein met ons jong lywe in bikinis. En die reuk van Coppertone daar by die swembad.

En, en, en.......

Van 'n nostalgiese Kannidood.

Hello SAS

The Clay oven is no more but the Indaba is going strong. I dont think people go there much for weekend socialising anymore. They seem to have focused more on attracting conferences.

The property the Clay Oven was on became a prime piece of real estate and the owners must have made a mint.

I dont know when last you were in the Fourways area but it is almost unrecognisable from 5 or 10 years ago. The development is beyond comprehension. There seem to be a 3 new shopping centres every year and the old ones get busier not quieter. Which means more traffic.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your comments on the photos by the way.

Last time I was was in S.A. I stayed with a friends in the Myconos complex in Four Ways. I couldn't believe how developed it has become and found the traffic a nightmare.

Thanks for your response MikeJ! I lived in Lonehill, but left SAfrica in 1999 and haven't been back.

Hello SAS

Thanks for your response MikeJ! I lived in Lonehill, but left SAfrica in 1999 and haven't been back.

The changes here since 1999 are enormous, I dont know if the fly-over was built by 1999 but I suspect not. This is the intersection between William Nichol and Witkoppen. Witkoppen is now a 4 lane bridge over William Nichol.

The buildings at that intesection now include the Fourways Mall (which you are obviously familiar with), Monte Casino (Monte is also expanding with a complex of restaurants), the Fourways Crossing shopping centre (used to be a nursery) and Pineslopes Shopping centre.

William Nichol north of Witkoppen is totally built up with car dealerships, a McDonalds and several other outlets.

Cedar Road north of Witkoppen has also gone mad, with the Broadacres Centre (its very nice) Cedar Square, a new hospital and town house complexes everywhere.

Visiting the area can be quite impressive but living here with the traffic is a bit too much sometimes. Apparently there are plans to build more roads, but unfortunately I wont be here long enough to see them.
