Hi all we are from SA but living in the uk for the last 8 years. We now have two kids and with the discipline and the no sport in schools here we have decided to move to Aus.

We went to Aus in December 06 and visited Melbourne , Perth , Brisbane and Sydney. In the end it was between Brisbane and Perth.

Now it looks like Brisbane...... So if there are SA people living in Brisbane please shout this way!!! We are looking at North Brisbane ....... we are after a big garden.

Before more questions....we also know a bit from after our visit and from a uk aus move website.......so ask and hopefully we can help..

I'm a qualified accountant and if any one in Brisbane knows a good employment agency please let me know..

We should have our visas hopefully in the next few weeks but will only go April next year as I have to give 6 months notice....so one more cold winter left for us.....

Hallo Dirk and Jackie

We have been in Brisbane juts more than a year now. I have not been to Perth, I can thus not compare the two. We came straight from South Africa (Cape Town) in August last year.

It has been a rough but great year.

We live in the Southern Suburbs and are very happy there (Mansfield).

We do not have the same size of garden we used to have in Cape Town (had a 900m2 block) - we now have a 670m2 block - but is it fine. We are close to School, shops, relatively close to town (12km - 30 min by bus) and close to the bus-route .

I am in IT, but I am contracting through an Agency called Zelda Recruitment. They specialise more in Finance placements. The person to talk to e-mail is Elizabeth Howearth - Elizabeth.Howearth@zeldarecruitment.com.au or alternatively you can e-mail a firen of mine who is also in recruitment - Rialet le Roux - rialet@entelectsolutions.com.au

You are welcome to contact me if you reuire any more information from Brisbane - it is a great place !

Cheers

Hi DirkandJackie

We moved to Brisbane nearly a year ago after 6 years in the UK, and can completely relate to your reasons re the school discipline and sports. It's been a fantastic move and I can really recommend Brisbane life!

We're living in Bracken Ridge in the outer north (30 mins from city centre) and love it here, our block is smaller than we'd ideally like (about 650m2), but a lot bigger than the 454m2 blocks in a lot of the new developments where the houses are built on top of each other - we have enough space for a swimming pool and two reasonable patches of lawn! And a hell of a lot bigger than our London flat!! If you look at slightly older properties (15 years or more) you've got a better chance of finding nice big blocks in the suburbs. Some of the new developments and land releases will have a few larger plots available too.

Bring all your winter woolies with you when you come, Brisbane's winter is a lot colder than we realised and most of the houses don't have any kind of heating - you'll definitely use your electric blanket etc for a couple of months at least!

Good luck with the final stage...

Clare

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi there

where staying in Pretoria but are originally from cape town.

We are thinking of doing the Auz move - but are not there yet.

My folks are not to happy though. They would rather have us go to the UK, with Europe around the corner and airoplane tickets being a lot more affordable. So it is very interesting to read your comments with regards to schools and sports. Would you mind to elaborate on those please! Would really like to hear your thoughts and experiences.

Regards

Melanie

I don't think one should make the decision on those criteria. yes its closer to the UK, but I can get cheaper flights to Sydney than to Birmingham at Flightcentre... it all depends on how you search. The other reason I wouldn't go to UK is that the weather is a lot different, sizes of stands are much smaller if u are lucky to have one at all.

I just think that you want something similar to RSA, but with a better future for your kids, and Australia is just that....
