Salaries

How do we evaluate whether the salary my dh is offered is market-related and whether we will be able to survive on it? My dh is in a specialised medical field, and we know that he will never earn executive-level salary - its just the nature of his job, no matter where in the world. But we are not sure how to judge whether we can in fact live on the salary he is being offered. I will hopefully also get a job, so we will be a two-income family, but in the first few months, we will probably be reliant on only his salary.

Also, what level of taxation are we looking at?

Hi Desert Daisy :ilikeit:

You can check here for the tax tables. The tax rate is determined by how much you earn, the more you earn the bigger the percentage of tax you have to pay.

It all depends on where you live, how many people in your family, and your lifestyle and of course what your salary will be whether you will be able to survive or not.

To give you an example, we are a family of 4. Our weekly rental is $300. We spend about $250 on food. Our electricity bill is around $150 per month. Telephone $80 per month, internet $70 per month, mobile around $100 per month.

Hope this helps :whome:

Daisy!

I was speaking to bloke from Sydney in our 4WD group, who is currently working in Whyalla, a country town in South Australia. His impression of Sydney where he was born and grew up, is that you'd need at least a six figure income to buy a house and live a reasonable lifestyle . . . . that's about R500,000 a year.

Sydney is great, I was told, for young folk, when I mentioned my youngest daughter studying at the University of Sydney next year. It has lots of different cultures and ethnic groups, good beaches and night life, but housing is double what you'd pay in other cities in Australia, with accomodation reflecting that aspect.

Penrith, an outer suburb in the far west on the foothills of the Blue Mountains, has the most affordable housing with a very basic weatherboard, timber framed and lined 3 bedroomed house on a small suburban block costing almost A$500,000 (R2,400,000)

This bloke's grandmother's house recently sold in the western subs for $750,000 (R3,500,000). The house was very run down with no repairs having been done to it for years and was pulled down shortly afterwards. It was the land that was the value.

Other cities in Australia are far more affordable and you can live comfortably on A$70,000 (R320,000) a year, paying a mortgage off and having the usual daily expenses.

Hi there

I suggest you have a squiz at realestate.com.au and seek.com.au and look at the salaries and rental costs there. Cars are cheap you can pick up a small one for around $5000 and rentals are alot cheaper than buying. Saying that I know a few people that have arrived in Sydney and within a year have bought. I suppose it depends on your savings and deposit. All my friends are single income homes but some have 1 car and alot rent. Alot of familys also have 3 children - go figure.

You could email your dh hubbys cv to agents and ask what salary to expect.

Good Luck

Hi

Being on a 457 visa will also make your hubby qualify for LAFHA (Living Away From Home Allowance) as well as weekly food expenses depending on the size of your family. Both these allowances are a huge tax benefit and worth while exploring. You can maybe contact a few tax consulting companies to get more info. The following company does payrolling for professional contractors and would be able to give some info with regards to LAFHA and how it works - ITG - www.myITG.com. They have offices in all the main cities in Australia.

Cheers

Hi DD,

Here is the best resource for what you want to know about salaries: http://www.hays.com.au/salary/default.aspx

Just click on the left hand column in the section that covers the job family you want to look at. This would give you a good idea of what is on offer in the different Australian cities. Your best bet is to judge for yourself, because your question about if you'd be able to survive is dependent on so many factors. "Survive" is a very relative term.

Also the recent Australian budget announced some tax cuts - you'd be able to find it with google. Good luck

Hi DD,

What Bob has mentioned about the cost of living in places like Sydney is definitely true, but you must remember that you also generally earn much higher salaries and wages in the bigger cities like Sydney (refer to the Hays site) and if you have your own business you are also generally able to tap into/benefit from the major business "hub" of Australia even Australasia and Pacific rim.

I guess it comes down to what your personal preferences and priorities are. I chose against Sydney since I did not want that "package" for me and my family anymore, we had our "innings" (and a good one at that!) in Jo'burg (the main business "hub" of Africa); Brisbane is our "sea-change". Dis 'n Lekka plek die!

Thanks for the website but it doesn't list my dh's job! If offered the job, he will be taking a position as an ALS paramedic in Perth.

Hi DD, What does "ALS" mean? Darl, You need to be less criptic if you want us to give you some decent advice. As mentioned - its very difficult to know or advise whether you'd be able live/survive on a particular salary if we know so little about you/your husband/his job etc.

Anyway are you able to share with us the salary being offered (or a range or a ballpark figure at least) If you don't want to disclose on the forum you can PM me if you are more comfortable with this.

I found something for a paramedic on the following site: http://jobsearch.gov.au/joboutlook/default...c&AscoCode=3491

The rest of the site: www.jobsearch.gov.au is also very useful.

cheers and good luck

Thanks Chatterbug. The company promised us the contact details of other SAfricans working for them in the same position, so we'll be able to get a good idea of cost of living based on their experiences.

I'm not too worried, as long as I'll be able to work and provide the second income for the jam on the bread!

Oh, and ALS stands for Advanced Life Support. He's the dude you really want to arrive on scene if you've had a serious accident. Like Rescue911 only better.....
