ABS Statistics relating to Temporary Residents in Australia

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released an overview of Temporary Migrants within the Australian population from the Census conducted in 2016.


The ABS analysis shows that in 2016 half of the 1.5 million temporary residents in Australia were living in Sydney (27%) and Melbourne (24%) with a further 14% in Brisbane.  [Sydney 27%, Melbourne 24%, Brisbane 14%, Perth 10.4%,  Adelaide 3.2%, Australian Capital Territory 1.5%, Darwin 0.7%, Hobart 0.4%]


New Zealand citizens on subclass 444 visas were the largest group of temporary residents. They were most likely to live in Brisbane (20%), followed by Melbourne and Sydney (both 18%). Three-quarters (76%) were in the labour force.

Interestingly within the New Zealand Citizens living in Australia on temporary NZ visas (SC 444) the 5th highest country of birth for those NZ Citizens was South Africa (n=8,908, 1.4% of the temporary New Zealand citizen visa holders).


Students were the second largest group (30%) and were most likely to have been born in China (27%) and India (13%). Most lived in Sydney (34%) or Melbourne (31%).
 

Temporary residents holding skilled work visas were the third largest group with 86% of those aged 15 years and over in the labour force. This group of temporary residents had the highest median weekly personal income at $1,143 per week. They were most likely to have been born in India (20%) and England (12%).
