TamTam

Question

Hi all

Any insights as to the best month to get cheap tickets from Brisbane to SA. I am only going for about 1 week.

Thanks

We've always found March or September to be the best value months. All dependent on airline specials so sign up to their newsletters and see what comes up. The offers start coming up around now for March travel.

I recommend waiting for valentines day to look for prices.  For the past 3 years Qantas has a massive sale the week of valentines day.

Also have a look at https://www.google.com/flights when you are searching for flights, you can set price alerts.

wow, thats an excellent gantt chart. been looking for economical prices for years. wonder why it costs a bit more from sydney?

pity about qantas/SAA. since 2003 or so, nothing much has changed onboard these flights. basic changes in entertainment...no frills and versin attitude for a long haul flight.

traveled to SA on emirates recently with dubai connect. its a long flight but dubai connect helps. (for aus passport holders, if the connecting time is excessive, overnight accommodation is provided in dubai . was absolutely fantastic. for $1800 AUD return in peak season. meals were excellent, and the stayover in dubai was brilliant.

SAA/qantas just has, "beef or chicken". eish

In order of excellence: Emirates, Singapore Air, SAA

Reviving an old thread...

We've got a wedding in South Africa in May 2023... Current prices are quite steep but most likely due to the time of year. Will definitely wait for the new year before booking. Will it be worthwhile to wait for the valentines week for Qantas specials again?

Saved my search on Google Flights for notifications for specials as well, but just don't want to leave it for too late...

Yeah we found that sale early Feb to have the best prices for Qantas.  Unfortunately flights are mega expensive at the moment.

You could look at Singapore airlines too, they used to be about half the price of Qantas for only about 4 hours longer trip.

Thanks Chris...

I'm keeping an eye on all the airlines at this stage. (Emirates, Singapore, Qatar, Etihad, Qantas). Singapore currently has decent prices (still a bit expensive but the best so far). The problem is that on the return leg there is a layover of over 11h.

But will keep looking out for prices and post feedback here if we manage to find well priced flights.

Hopefully the PER-JHB bookings open again in the new year. That is the closest to flying in a straight line back to RSA 😃

Interestingly enough the Brisbane - Sydney - Joburg flights are quicker door to door because they use a faster aeroplane for the international flights.  The Brisbane - Perth flight is pretty slow.

Thanks Chris, actually makes sense thinking about it 😃

Both Qantas options are first price currently. BNE-SYD-JHB being the quickest

BNE-PER-JHB allowing for a stop in Perth and possibility to look at a night or two there with friends.

Singapore had decent prices, but had poor layover times (10h+ on return). Seems like they were still optimizing and combining flight routes that resulted in this. However seems like more flights added in the last week or so which allows for more options.

But will keep on watching and post here if we find anything

No valentines day specials from Qantas this year...

Ended up booking on Singapore. $2198.00 return from Brisbane. This was the cheapest option available.
