Applying for citizenship with an expired passport

JT87

Question

I am going to apply for Aus citizenship, but my SA passport expired in 2017. I have applied for a new SA passport but thats only going to arrive in March or so. Is it alright to apply for Australian citizenship with an expired passport?

UPDATE: I found out you can't apply with an expired passport, will just have to wait for my SA one to arrive.

Thanks for the update...  glad I went through the effort of requesting a new one already... I still have 2+ years to go, so no rush for me.

On Renewing a SA Passport:

Do you know how to get a status update from SA home affairs? I have checked with the consulate here, and they have sent my documents to SA.. would just like to know if SA is actually processing it.

No sorry mate, I called them up and they just said I have to wait 6 months from when they received my documents. Annoying, as it only takes a couple weeks to get done in SA.

It takes 3 - 5 business days in South Africa!  The only reason it takes 6+ months if you're outside of ZA is to p!ss us off as they have the systems in place to process this quickly.

I definitely won’t renounce mine, because it’s only a hassle once every 10 years, and plus, I like to p!ss them off by keeping it. 9th generation SAfrican here, no ways am I giving anyone that small satisfaction 😉
