Karools
I've seen a lot of posts regarding getting a cell immediately after landing. Is there a reason people don't just activate roaming on their phones and use their old sim for the first couple of weeks? I'm assuming it must be a price thing, but surely the certainty of your own sim is quite nice amidst all the unknowns after landing?
greggle
A number of benefits to getting your new SIM and number sooner rather than later: - You're going to need to provide your new phone number when applying for Medicare, Drivers license conversion, house rental agents etc - Most plans have local and national calls are free so why pay roaming rates? Some plans (e.g. Amaysim) have free international SMS and calls - If you use my link (http://amaysi.ms/greggle) when signing up online, we will both get a $10 credit - so why delay us both receiving that benefit? - If you need to feel the security and comfort of your previous home (Australia will now be your new home when you arrive) then bring a big snuggly teddybear ... a SIM card is cold and hard and small which makes it unpleasant to hug. - When you make new friends, which you will, they're not going to call you on your SA number. - Its part of the psychology of acknowledging that you've started a new chapter in your life ... think of your new SIM and phone number as a trophy of reward for the courageous step you have taken.
wonderer
Well, our roaming boomeranged on us. All the networks have roaming on pay as you go, except for cell c, which we didn't realise until it was too late. We ended our contracts there as we felt it would be easier to just pay as you go. After flight delays, cancellations and missed connections we ended up in a very small terminal, very late at night without working phones.... (everything closed as well). There was a vending machine but it was not clear what you would buy - it only said $10, $30 or $40, so we couldn't quickly google to see what to buy... So, there we were with 10 pieces of luggage (157kg) and no connection to the world ...... all worked out in the end, but just double check your plan. (the free airport wifi is not very reliable and we couldn't get it to work on that leg, maybe it was switched off for the night )
