JohannSmithSA
What would the options be for after care for a 13 year old?
RYLC
There is no after care for high school kids. School finishes at around 3:30 ish (different at each school) and some kids hang out at the library until they are picked up, some walk home, some catch a bus home. Some schools which are grade R to 12 will have after care on site and can accommodate year 7 kids but chances are your child won't want to go as he'll be the oldest and only. I agree that it is an issue and I work part time to accommodate our children's after school needs.
monsta
@RYLC raises an interesting issue of part time work. With kids you may want to re-work your work. For example, a warehouse may work from 6:30am till 2:30pm. That means you could be at your kids school at 3:30 to fetch them. Sure, being the accountant, or supply chain manager, etc.. for a warehouse man not be as glamorous a job as being a an accountant in the CBD... but it has the advantage that you could be home for 3pm. So, what you loose in salary, you could partially make up in savings on after school care... and you get to spend more time with your kids. But as always, if you are moving to a particular job because of the work hours, get them in writing. If they can't put them in writing its because they are concerned that your hours may change at some point.
