What recruitment agencies can you recommend in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane. We are already aware of seek and indeed, but would like to get in contact with some agencies specialising in accounting and IT.

ExtraStaff have branches in all the major cities. TalentOptions are part of the same group and although they are based in Adelaide they are connected to all the same recruiters and positions advertised. 100Mums (for te ladies) operate out of Sydney but often have positions advertised in other states.  SKL Recruitment also operate out of Sydney and specialise in accoutring, actuary, CA and CIA positions.

Its probably best to apply for the jobs on Seek that you feel closely matches your skills and experience and from there you will meet the recruiters who will have other jobs to try and match you to. Applying for jobs and going for interviews is in itself a full time job. From an accounting point of view your options will be:

1. Auditing (as in big 4 or mid tier) (probably easier to get into if you are in auditing but not for everyone if you are not used to being a number and working long hours)

2. Business services (which is similar to small accounting practices in SA, mainly tax, consulting and financial statement focus) This is where I found happiness. :)

3. Financial accountants (listed companies, normally they are picky and look for Big 4 first movers or experienced)

4. Accountant at a privately owned company (may be difficult due to no local experience but not impossible)

Sydney and Melbourne are probably the best place for IT and accounting in my opinion.

Sadly I wouldn't be able to recommend any of them and I've met and spoken to numerous ones in Melbourne. But you need them so you don't have much choice! Especially in Accounting and I.T. These are both fields where the recruiters are blessed with numerous candidates i.e. over-supply so they don't have to give good service or try and take your needs into account.

The big name recruiters tend to have the most roles so I would start there. Based on your background they will tell you if they can assist as some specialise in Financial Services and some only look at other industries like FMCG and Retail etc.

I would start with the the big ones and see where it takes you. Robert Walters, Sharp and Carter, Hays etc

Unlikely in Accounting that any recruiter wants to assist before you have landed in Australia . Might be different for Audit and Big 4 moves though but I have no experience with that.

Please don't overlook Michael Paige. We (in Brisbane) both struck up good relationships with their recruiters and got our breaks through them. If you're coming from an angle of hybrid finance-IT skills and experience do look outside the pure finance roles or accounting firms.

Look into roles with titles referring to 'system accountant' or similar. There are also often many business analyst roles that sometimes are badly named and are actually system accountant or project accountant roles in nature.

Also don't underestimate Linkedin. A lot of companies are advertising jobs directly there these days.

As for agencies, I wouldn't bother with TOM Executive Recruitment in Sydney - hopeless bunch from both a candidate and employer point of view.

AMGE+ and Thompson Cook in Melbourne.

The former is the agency via whom I landed my first accounting role ( one senior counsultant there is Susan Fouche - Saffer immigrant herself )

The latter is a company that we just used that put forward 4 quality candidates for a role in our finance department and 3 out of the 4 were not Aussie born.

Always interesting how different people have different experiences. I think Thompson Cook are terrible or at least the consultant I had was!

I did have a better experience with AMGE+ though!

Within the big recruiters you have many individuals, all of whom, as has been pointed out, have been blessed with an abundance of candidates. Do not assume that because they have your resume on file they will pull it out. You will need to apply for each and every job you see and if you don't see one, pick up the phone and give them a call anyway. Stay front of mind. If they say no, ask them what else they have or what one of their colleagues will have.

Your biggest hurdle will be a lack of local experience, so be prepared to compromise. Step down, take a contract role, work part time, build up some experience. Read up on local tax requirements (GST - operates in a very similar fashion to SA VAT but at a lovely 10%) and Payroll Tax (one of those taxes which seems to be just plain mean) spring to mind as front runners.

Also be aware that South Africans can come across as quite arrogant, without meaning to do so. Try to moderate tone and extra polite. That isn't to say you cannot argue or disagree, just in a gentler fashion.

My first job I got from arguing. I called a recruiter (having spoken to about 30 and sent out about 80 resumes with no luck). Every objection he raised, I raised a counter argument. He said I had no local experience, I pointed the a wide range of industries. He pointed to a gap, I pointed out the resilience of moving halfway across the world. We went back and forth in this fashion with me feeling more and more like a television commercial (but wait, there's more) until he agreed to meet with me. He put me forward for a totally different role, but I got my first job.

So keep at it, don't be afraid to try something different and think outside the square (I really miss saying outside the box). Good luck.

As @DXB2OZ pointed out... recruiters build lists of many, many candidates. Then they look at the job adverts that come across their desk and see if there are any obvious matches.

I am sure, someone here has probably recommended to you to read job adverts. If you have the skills the job adverts require, then make it very clear on your CV that you have those skills.

For example, you might say "worked the POS system in the pub"  but the job advert says "can take payments with mastercard paypass". You might think, "its pretty obvious that if I can work a POS system, I can take any kind of credit card payment". But think about the recruiter who is doing a keyword search on dozens of CVs for "mastercard paypass". You want your CV to end up in his search results ;)

As greggle said, LinkedIn is your friend.  I had zero bites through agents, not one.  Then I subscribed to the month free of LinkedIn premium and started applying for jobs directly.  Got a job in under a week as soon as I did that, in Brisbane nogal.

In Sydney, I got my first accounting job through Mars. But have recruited using REO Group, RichardLloyd, Robert Harf.

You can try Actuate Recruitment  (niche) for audit and Risk or Vouchfor  (niche) for some IT jobs.
