Recruitment timeline

Applied officially as a PR holder for a fantastic job in Melbourne today with a medium sized consulting firm. Hubby's cv sent to a key contact. Feels good. Know it is only the first one, but the fact that we have started is positive.

My questions are:

1. How long does the recruitment process take on average, from first contact through to final selection? I am in the consulting sector and my husband is an engineer.

2. Where do you highlight that you have permanent residence? I included it in the main email and on my cv, which has been converted into Australian format.

3. Is it acceptable to follow up with a phone call after a few days?

4. What is a normal process; number of interviews, psychometrics, assignments?

Thanks in advance for your insights.

Anybody?

Have I perhaps asked too many questions in one topic?

Have a Skype interview with a specialized recruitment company next week, but no confirmation on a date from consulting firm after an email saying that an assistant would set up the interview.

Probably not getting any responses because it's impossible to answer. Every company has their procedures (just like RSA) and unless we know the company and have worked there ourselves we would have NO idea.

Its a a bit like having a baby. We can all guess or tell you our stories about how long our labour was and what procedures we had to have but at the end of the day your experience will be unique. We really can't answer and any answer will only set you up with expectations of how it "should" be. Just go with the flow...

Thank you for the feedback @RYLC

Think I am being mindful of coming across as too pushy and trying to do things the 'Australian' way. Working on going with the flow :D

The only actual tip I can think of about not wanting to sound too pushy is to try not to use the word "I" too much and/or to emphasise team wherever possible.

You'll hear it with sports captains all the time.  The guy might have kicked the winning goal but you wouldn't know if from his comments: "I couldn't have done it without the team, We've all worked really hard this past week and everybody will be celebrating tonight for sure"

So possibly pushy example would be "I supervised a team of designers and managed to get the project done in record time."

Less pushy would be "I headed an amazing team of designers who worked brilliantly together in getting the project done in record time."

It's subtle but they want to hear that you'll fit in and not big note yourself.

What is the Australian format?

@JulesR

Not an expert on this, so we paid a cv writing specialist in to re-format ours. To be honest, I don't think it looks that different to many resumes I have seen in South Africa. Our format is basically headline paragraph, core skills, work history starting with most recent (includes achievements), educational history, membership/ certifications, special achievements (e.g. Award for ...), language and computer literacy, two references. Whole CV is 4 pages. The service also included a standard cover letter that can be customized for each job application.

We used King of CVs, which is actually a New Zealand based firm.

Thank you @RYLC - Sage advice.

Just on a related note.  As you probably know, Linkedin is a very important tool in Australia.  Please use it to the fullest.  My husband has been working in Sydney, at various employers for 8 years.  He has secretly been on the lookout for a new role, for a few months now, and had always kept his Linkedin profile up to date.  He was contacted by a recruiter who was trawling Linkedin for candidates that matched an available role.   He started his new job on Monday.  So far so good.

@JulesR and @Husky, @Dugong has a useful and comprehensive comprehensive post on job hunting in the settling in section of the forum.
