SA Accountant in Melbourne for consultation

Hi Guys,

 

My wife and I will be visiting Melbourne during the last week of October.

 

Could someone recommend an accountant based in Melbourne that is knowledgeable in the taxation implications of immigration, preferably a South African CA?

Surely if you are looking for someone to advise on the tax implications of immigrating to Australia, you want an Australian tax accountant? If you want to know about the tax implications of emigrating from SA, you don't need to wait until you are in Melbourne.

I was hoping to speak with someone that has themselves immigrated and is currently working as an accountant in Australia. Failing that, anyone else that you can recommend would be great!

Unfortunately, I do not have anyone to recommend. Having said that, I would suggest that you look for a tax agent practicing in an area which has a high immigrant population (e.g. Caulfield in Melbourne may be a good start).

 

In Australia, accountants tend to be very specialised. So, you are looking for a tax agent or a tax accountant. Send an email to make contact and line up an appointment for when you are here - you should be able to gauge level of experience through this. 

 

Having studied local tax, the requirements for immigrants are not onerous, so you should be fine. You just need someone who knows the tax law and is able to interpret any new requirements. Remember that SA and Australia have a dual taxation agreement, so you will not pay double tax. Whatever you have paid to one is generally deducted from what you owe to the other.

 

If you wish to do some advance research, the ATO's (Australian Tax Office) website may be a good place to start.
