Help needed with taking along medicines

Hi Everyone,

We're going on our LSD trip in September, and as I have two small kids, I'll be taking along the usual meds.

I've decided to get a letter from my doctor for all the meds I'm taking along, even though they are mostly over the counter medicine.

My question is this:

My friend we're visiting in Brisbane, has asked me to bring multiples of some medicines for her, that she can't find in Aus.  Do I need a seperate prescription for her meds, as I fear it might look ridiculous if one person takes over 4 bottles of ACC200.  3 for her and one for my family of 4. As well as 3 of this and 3 of that...

What should I do?

You can take 3 months worth of meds for personal use and only need a script for prescription drugs - no need to get a letter for over the counter stuff.

To get your friend a bottle of this or that won't really make a difference but if you're going ot arrive with a box full of medicine which could clearly not be for personal use, you may get questioned about it.  Depending on what it is, you should still be fine but anything containing serious pain killers or other drugs which may only be available in Australia either on a script of dispensed by a pharmacist, could be an issue.  If they want 10 tubes of germoline, no one will batt en eyelid but if they want 20 packs of cold medicine containing stuff like pseudoephidrine, that's another story.  I think your friend is a bit selfish expecting you to do all that for them anyway - not only will it add quite a bit of weight to your lugguage but you're the one who will have to do the explaining at customs.  When I buy a packet of Nurofen plus (ibuprofin with codeine) for instance, only a pharmacist can dispense it, and they take down my licence number - that's how much they're starting to clamp down on it...  Offer to bring them one of each item and limit it to max 4 or 5 items in total.  Don't bring anything containing pseudoephidrine unless you have a script for it.

Thank you for your help Riekie.  She wants cold meds for the kids.  3 tubes of Acc200, 3 tubes of Coryx and the like.  But now if I want to bring cold meds for myself during my holiday there, I'm scared it will look like I'm trying to run a pharmacy. My husband is so paranoid he says she must courier stuff if she really wants it.

Something else to consider, those tubes that acc and corex come in will likely be very visible on a scan and might trigger a bag search if they see 10 odd metal tubes in your bags.

My mom bought me 3 tubes of ACC200 and was no problems when she came to visit. Keep it in hand luggage and say for colds and flu. You are allowed 3 months meds. I bought a hand luggage bag full of cold and flu meds as well as vitamins. We had no problems, we did declare meds with cortizone (steroids) in... barely looked at it or the papers, waved us through.

I just ordered some ACC200 on Ebay.

Will see how it goes getting through.

It cost me $14 odd for 20 tablets.

Make sure to declare the stuff you bring. If you do that the worst that will happen is that you might lose it. If you try to sneak it through and they find you...serious trouble. If you really want to you could try to split the meds between yourself and your husband and go in different queues. But if it's just over the counter stuff, don't stress too much about it. Also, like they said, you can bring three months worth. If your doctor writes you a script for the meds you are taking to cover the total amount of meds, they will also not have an issue with it.

Summary:

  • Scripts, where needed
  • Declare it
  • No worries

Thank you very much for your help guys.  My friend would like 3 tubes of Coryx, 3 tubes if Linctagon and 3 tubes of Acc200. I've decided I'll take along the 3 tubes of Linctagon and the two tubes of Acc that I've purchased, and that is that. We're traveling with 2 little ones, so I hope/think the above will not look out of the ordinary.

Thanks again

The coryx contains pseudoephedrine - you have to declare it.  Best to get a script.

This just arrived yesterday. All the way from Poland of all places, no issues.

If you really need some and can't get from SA then this is an option.

Hi all,

Does anyone know if you may take opened medication on hand luggage? I have over the counter medication (rescue remedy -liquid) which I am already using so the bottle is open and i would like to have access to it on the plane, as well as blister packs of over the counter medication (allergex, in blister strip but original box missing) that some capsules are missing; and a tub of Panado tablets of which the container is already opened and some tablets used. Or do all your medications need to be in unopened containers and original boxes?

Tablets are not a problem, especially prescription stuff. If you take a bottle of liquid, 100ml is the maximum the container can hold. Customs do not generally work with 200ml and you claim it is half full, so 100ml. They generally work strictly by the book. On your incoming entry form you have to tick the yes box for medication, whether it is in your carry on or your booked luggage.

Just for clarity, If the liquid is in a 200ml bottle for instance, and there is only 100ml left in it, you can still not bring it in your hand lagguage.  The capacity of the bottle has to be less than 100ml.  Same for deoderant - the capacity of the can has to be less than 100ml, even if it is half empty.

Any allowed medicines, whether opened or not, half used or not, is OK.  It does not have to be still in the box unless it is a prescription medication, for which you need a script or at least the pharmacy label on the box. That said, we travel in and out of Australia all the time and I take meds - including prescription meds - in my first aid bag and it's never ever been checked.  I tick medicine on the incoming passenger card and write next to it:  first aid kit.

My husband brought prescription medicine.  On the customs form they bundled 4 or 5 things together.   I cant remember them all, but it was something like :  "Do you have medicine, porn, x, x, or x."  My husband ticket yes and was waved through without them even asking whether it was porn or medicine.

Haha, that's funny but probably pretty logical in terms of the risk it poses to immigration.

It's in reference to items which would be illegal to import:

Goods that may be prohibited or subject to restrictions, such as
medicines, steroids, illegal pornography, firearms, weapons or illicit drugs

When we went over 2 years ago for a holiday, we took my wife's medication and a letter from her doctor outlining what the medicine was for and the dosage. We were never asked for the letter - however we took it just in case immigration wanted to know what it was for etc.

That's the best approach.
