Pell
Thanks, @EmNew , I wrote to them and they made me fill in a Special Consideration form. While I don't want their charity, it pisses me off because I knew my stuff going into the exam, and because of a glitch like that, I had to rush like mad through the rest of the paper, thus the quality of my answers was impacted. Question 1 was big in terms of calcs and explanations, also 9 marks is 18% of the paper. I'm sure that I missed quite a few tricks because of the mad rush. I wouldn't have been so mad had I lost a 2 mark question, but still..... I hope the guy in your exam complains as well. It boggles my mind how they have a computer-based exam, yet they have no IT person on hand who can help with issues like that. The two invigilators were two old people who knew nada about computers. Mine wasn't the only problem. There was one guy who just could not submit his paper, no matter how many times he pushed "Submit and Finish". I spoke to someone who just wrote their CPA final exam and they said that for their exam, they have an IT person on standby, for precisely that kind of reason. EmNew
So glad you got your 'objection' in . They really need to get the process fully working . It's not on to have those kind of techgremlins creeping in to add additional stress during an exam . I just hope they get enough letters / forms / comments in to review and to overhaul this online process . We also had a clueless older invigilator . Agree there should be a techie in room to attend to glitches .
Leavingforgood
@Pell @EmNew Hi - a week later.......so relieved its over, it was wonderful to put the the study file in cupboard. I'm wondering if I had the same stress when I wrote the Board. I think as one gets older there is a higher expectation from oneself. @Pell, that's horrible what happened! At least you managed to still run through the whole paper, I would have been a wreck and wouldn't be in a state of mind to finish. There were so many youngsters in the exams though and I only found out that day were face-to-face sessions in Perth! Anyone thinking of going for the second round? DXB2OZ
If you are planning on working in tax, CTA2 is very interesting, but everything here seems to be so specialised I would be sure you need/want it before you go ahead.

EmNew
Not sure about continuing yet. I am waiting to hear about possible permanent employment where I am currently fulfilling a maternity leave contract. If I do get a permanent job there, tax won't be relevant at all, so would be a bit of a waste of time, effort and money to do CTA2. If not, I may continue to just bolster my CV with more local qualifications and broaden my options. Hope you're all enjoying your study free evenings and weekends
Waylander
CTA1 is useful only as a general intro to Aus tax - it is broad knowledge but not detailed/specific. I did CTA1 and when I had to do an online quiz as an employment screening exercise, I just managed to get 70% on the tax quiz. The level of specific detail the quiz assumed knowledge of was astounding (especially relating to franking of dividends and GST questions). Once you get through the full CTA course you will probably be sought after in the tax expertise field, but CTA1 is just a CV filler which basically says, look, I have made an effort to learn the local landscape.....
EmNew
Hi Fellow CTA peeps, Did I misread some communication ? I swear I remember reading somewhere that results were out by the 5th ( I know results have come out later for prior exams, I'm just trying to establish if I read what I now can't find again correctly )
Pell
I emailed them and they said that the results should come out no later than 8th July, via email. I also had it in my head that it should have been 5th July (the do say that the results are due three weeks after the exam), but why are we surprised? Pell
@EmNew and @Leavingforgood, Ladies, I'm confident congratulations are in order for both of you! Just touching base to see how you two are doing.
EmNew
Hoping it was good news all round? Also confident congrats pending to all I am tempted to move on to CTA2 now........ problem is my current contract ends 31/08 so even if I get a permanent role at this company, it will still be a new job, and I really don't want to be in that position again - juggling settling into a new role and night time studies. I will digest the pass, dwell on it, and revisit in 2017.
Pell
@EmNew, so glad for you!! I'm also busy digesting & ruminating..... I couldn't believe it, I ended up getting a high distinction so my boss said I should really give some thought to doing the CTA2A+B, then do the Graduate Diploma of applied tax law from there.... Problem is, do I really want to? On a different note, I liked their feedback on how many marks we got per question and realized that I missed out on marks where I had to deliberately move on to the next question. I didn't do spectacularly well in structures, as I was expecting, however, I don't care, this was better than expected and I somehow don't want it to give me false confidence.
