Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good paediatrician in the western suburbs? Our little one is feeling ill and I'd like to get her checked out ASAP.

Donny, usually in Aus you take a "normal" sick child to your GP.  My kids have only seen a Pediatrician once, when they were discharged from hospital as newborns. Sorry cant help you further.

Donny, to my knowledge, in order to take your child to a pediatrician you would first have to go to a GP to get a referral. If I am wrong, I am sure someone will correct me.

Oh I see, thanks Rozellem and Mara. We've always ever just taken her to her pediatrician since she was born so I thought it might work the same way here. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. I still feel like a fish out of water here and really appreciate the guidance.

Hi Donnyvcpt,

As the others have pointed out, the system is quite different here. If you need to see a Dr. you see a GP, they will tend to you, you might need to have a follow-up, and then only then, if you've not recovered will they can REFER you to a specialist if needed. Even then that's just a letter that shares you have been referred and for what, you still have to make the appointment and getting an appointment can have long wait/lead time.

If you end up on hospital they'll see you right away and if you it's life threatening they'll throw the book at treating your case. The medical care is VERY good here, the system is just a little different from what you are used to.

That said if you have PR, Medicare covers most of these visits, if you can find a BULKING BILLING medical center they will cover the full costs. They submit directly to Medicare, who pays for the consultation, meaning if there is any doubt, see a Dr. it's not costing you anything more than seeing your tax money at work.

In your case, I'd do one of two things, if you are really worried about your little one take him/her to the ER unit at Randwick Children's Hospital and they will see to you, no charge, though if you have private medical aid they will ask you for your details, but don't claim it from them, it's covered by Medicare.

Since most Medical Centers are closed now you can call the after hours house Dr. and they will send a Dr. to you for a home visit. The number is 137425, you tell them your child's symptoms and they'll send a Dr. to you, usually within 2-hours, they bulkbill as well, you just need a valid Medicare number.

Hope that helps!

Cheers

Matt
