Best Wood for a Braai

Recommended Posts

Hi All

We have been in Adelaide for 6 months now and loving it.

What is the best wood to buy for a braai. Have tried the redwood that sells as firewood but the coals die off very quickly when you spread them. I am not a big fan of charcoal or brickettes so hoping that there is a wood here that is similar to rooikrans or even Kameeldoring.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

You are likely referring to jarrah, but dunno if you get it over east. I use it for braaing all the time and the quality determines the outcome. I use briquettes and the Woolies no name one is quite okay. .

If money is no object, you cannot go past grape vine stumps, or acacia or apricot stumps. Some of them I once used in the Karoo were over 500 years old and burnt for 3 days.

Wood density is the key, as is moisture content. Density of over 800kg/m3 id stunning for a great braai.

Glad to see you are not a "darksider" on gas!!!

Hi Paul,

I terms of firewood for coals, i think red gum would be your best bet, usually sells for around $3.5 per kg.

Cheers,

Robbie
