joweni
Thanks Mara-we are trying every possible avenue and investigating any opportunity but age is a huge factor (59?) and so far every employer has balked because of the cost and hassle of the 457. Can anybody on the forum gives us some info about the business visa as this might be the only other alternative.
Mara
Hi Joweni, sorry you are having a problem because of age, and yes, that would definitely be a problem!About a business visa, perhaps the best would be to PM either TTMI (Taylor Made Immigration) or SD_MOA (Migration Outcomes Australia) who are both registered migration agents that are always willing to assist forum members.Good luck, I sincerely hope things come right for you. TeeTMI
Hi JoweniUnfortunately generally the age limit for the general business/investor visas is <55.Given you are asking about business visas I will mention that if he has the relevant skills / prior experience there is potentially a 'self-sponsored' 457 visa. However it is not a straightforward process and he should take advice and investigate the issues thoroughly. Has your friend looked at any potential family visa options? Good luck finding a sponsorTee
ottg
I have no expertise or first hand knowledge about that line of work but would like to share a few thoughts. Somewhere you mentioned that you are teaching full time and your husband previously bought a franchise and you are in Aus >9 years. So you should have a very wide network already.a. Is their a possibility he can tap into those contacts? You never know who they may know! Followup continuously if they in senior positions. Ask them to refer their contacts. Get close to ''nagging'' them..... b. Investigate manufacturing industries related to railways and mining:Google for Railway tenders, contracts and contractors Have a look if you can find any results for recently closed tenders. Normally it get published in the public domain; what tenders are available and who won the tenders. Then contact those contractors directlyc. See if their is a Chamber of Commerce in South Australia. Usually they have a Industry Directory of members. Followup on all related companies for your line of skills. Contact them directly (phone - mail - phone) and see if they currently employ. Then see if you can get an inside contact name through your mates that may benefit your application.Good luck!
joweni
Thanks for the ideas. We are trying to help a fellow Zim-we are fortunate to have citizenship and both the franchise and teaching are going well. We have been very lucky and are using every avenue to try and help our friend as he does not want to leave Oz and go back to SA. My husband is spreading the word through his business contacts but so far no luck.
21yearsoutofrsa
Now that I know it isn't you I can bring the matter up.Someone, aged 59, is currently in Australia on a 457? The logic fails me, is this person planning to die at their desk, because they can never retire in Australia?
ottg
Age will definitely be a major issue in his profession as the competition is big, many senior roles are already taken, and as you know manufacturing in the motor industry is dead. Thus he should try to create his own income: consulting, training, advisory, franchise while being aware of the "new normal" and new demands.Indicators from NAB's Economic outlook for 2015: http://seebusiness.nab.com.au/Economic-Outlook-for-2015This provides many ideas where to look but how a 457 will fit into this is another question. Nev
Sometimes you can pack away more retirement savings in a different country, my Ma did that in the UK, even if you cant stay you just earn a lot more here
Spider
I assume this person has been here less than 2 years because they would be able to then do PR?That's awful loads of luckhave they looked at the mining corporations for anything? Nev
Over a certain age you no longer qualify to convert the 457 to PR, so rolling the 457 is the only option

blung
Hi, just curious, if you cannot convert to PR because you are over the age limit and have to keep rolling the 457 then what is the end game? At some point won't you be forced to retire and the have to leave the country? Edited January 9, 2015 by blung
joweni
Thank you Crisplet. The people on this forum are just incredible .
Nev
Yea Blung, but hopefully by that stage you have built up saving to take and retire somewhere else, for example $40k buys you a retirement visa in Thailand
