WA School going age - simplified

I have finally got my head around the schooling grades.

Hopefully this may help simplify it for others too.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA


Children are to start formal school when they turn 5 by June 30.


Primary School

  • Kindergarten: 5 to 6 yrs.
  • Grade/Year 1: 6 to 7 yrs.
  • Grade/Year 2: 7 to 8 yrs.
  • Grade/Year 3: 8 to 9 yrs.
  • Grade/Year 4: 9 to 10 yrs.
  • Grade/Year 5: 10 to 11 yrs.
  • Grade/Year 6: 11 to 12 yrs.
  • Grade/Year 7: 12 to 13 yrs.

Secondary School

  • Year 7: 12- to 13 yrs.
  • Year 8: 13- to 14 yrs.
  • Year 9: 14- to 15 yrs.
  • Year 10: 15- to 16 yrs.
  • Year 11: 16- to 17 yrs.
  • Year 12: 17- to 18 yrs.

That means that children with birthdays in:-

July to October will be the oldest in the class.


November to February will be right in the middle.


March to June will be the youngest in the class.
