Skrag001
HiI've been looking at banks that allows me to open an account from SA and the slickest seems to be Commonwealth Bank (http://www.commbank.com.au/). Do anybody have any other recommendations or are they good enough. I'm sure that banks there is very much like here; they all have their problems ...RegardsJohan
Malans
Hi JohanWe used Commonwealth and got our accounts set up from SA before we left. We found them to be very good and everything went really smoothly on this side when we landed and needed to activate our accounts. I would recommend them.Good luck
GideonVD
Agreed, CommBank has given us brilliant service and feedback since we opened our accounts. Will recommend them without thinking twice.
Pertheption
I have also heard that NAB are excellent and offer accounts with no bank charges ever! They seem to be my favourite at the moment for when I get to open an account if ever I get a CO!

They also have a program for the kids called Dollarmites, which operates through the schools and teaches the kids to save from a young age. Every deposit made through the school is rewarded with a token and once the child has collected 10 they can exchange them for various different gifts.

HansaPlease
Thought ANZ was good, was with them for 6 years... That was until we switched to Commbank. Awesome.
bbop
I just opened an account with Bankwest from the Middle East. There is no 12 month arrival clause involved like the other banks. I just stated this right from the beginning. ME Bank is the same.
Skrag001
Awesome. Thanks for all the replies. So my short list in order of preference (Gauged by the comments above ):1) Commonwealth Bank2) NAB3) BankwestWhat is this about the 12 month arrival clause? I've seen it mentioned on one of the other threads but didn't pay attention. PS: Nobody is recommending SA banks like Investec or the big internationals like HSBC? Any reason for this? I guess their fees and 'entry requirements' are much higher.
GideonVD
Basically, you don't pay fees or such in the first twelve months, after that if you didn't activate or don't have an Australian tax number you will be charged and interest will get taxed at the higher rate for non-residents. Skrag001
Awesome. So not a problem if I'm doing my LSD in Feb. I assume that I can activate it then, give them my SA address and then the 10% tax applies. Can I apply/get for my Tax number on a trip to AUS or do I need an AUS address? I guess their fees and 'entry requirements' are much higher. There are 4 big banks in OzCommonwealth (CBA)NABWestpacANZThe others are niche players - Banl of Queensland, Bendigo bank and dozens others. The big 4 are the only ones (almost) guaranteed to be found anywhere - choose one and when you get here, look around and decide if you want to move to a more specialised, smaller bank.I personally don't like the big 4 because they don't pass on savings when the RBA drops rates .... they make huge profits for their investors - not too much for the depositors. When I win the Lotto - some other bank(s) will be looking after my millions. springmielie
Cashkows (Hugo van Zyl) with Westpac (Julie Mueller - Brisbane) helped my daughter with opening her account from South Africa and what professional and friendly service she got. Skrag001
Great. I've been looking at Cashkows offerings and I might give them a call/email.
YellowFuzz
We're also looking into this now. My husband is at Investec here in SA, and we were thinking we might go with Investec in Aus.But since it seems quite possible to open a bank account from SA, we might look into one of the other banks. I'm not sure how Investec rates in Aus (costs, convenience etc), here in SA we used them because the service is so much better. But I guess the banks in Aus might have better service anyway compared to SA
