21yearsoutofrsa
1. Say2. Multiply through by a, then3. Subtract 4. Factor both sides5. Divide by 6. Observing that 7. Combine like terms on the left8. Divide by the non-zero b

21yearsoutofrsa
Got it. This is actually the proof that you cannot divide by zero. Now show it to your kids and get them to ask their teacher, see how good your school's maths department is. OubaasDik
Actually it's step 5 where he divides by which is zero
GideonVD
not really, because a is not b therefore not 0, but since a was proven to be 0, he's actually dividing by -b
OubaasDik
Actually "a" has NOT been proven to be 0 - equation 1 says "a" has been set to be "b". Nowhere is there anything about a being
OubaasDik
Actually the sleight of hand comes in in step 3 where he subtracts If you substitute a for b in the equation (which you can because of equation 1you get a^2 - a^2 = a^2 - a^2which is 0 = 0then we proceed to divide by (a - b ) which is (a - a) = 0So we're dividing 0 by 0 , and you can mathematically get some very funny things there. All the rest is obfuscation and smoke and mirrors. Werns
Funny picture and glad people actually know where the proof of 1+1=2 went wrong.I always show this to my students on the 1st day of class and ask them to find the mistake.I've only ever had one student find it.Hopefully after teaching them for a year, they would get it.
