Visiting Canberra - where to start?

I am leaving SA on a scouting mission to Canberra Sunday evening. I have 4 full days in Canberra to explore as much as possible with the hope I will be able to make the best decision for my family - stay in SA or move to Canberra. I have tried searching for stuff on the internet, but really difficult to get a 'feel' for anything!

I am staying in the Ibis Styles Canberra Narrabundah. I have a kitchen and bathroom company in JHB and would be looking to do a similar thing in Canberra...What areas are great to live in? Where are the good schools? What is the health care like? etc etc etc

With regards to work, I have searched for kitchen companies in Canberra and have made a list who I am going to see, any one on the forum in the industry?

Shoo....I know this is probably what everyone asks but any help/advice no matter how small will help give me some direction and focus for the 4 days.

Thanks ahead!

Stay in SA or move to Canberra ? I know which I'd chose but why are you only limiting your choice to the ACT ?

We are in the construction industry - we run our own small business - and part of this business means we occasionally deal with business's that install kitchens and bathrooms. I dont know of any South African run kitchen/bathroom companies, but that does not mean they dont exist. Canberra is full of kitchen and bathroom companies. I suggest you head to Fyshwick - and go to the HIA centre - there is a dedicated showroom for bathroom and kitchen companies there.

Narrabundah is close to the HIA centre - Fyshwick is right there. Its an "industrial" type area - an area you go to for cars, furniture, home improvements etc.

There are no real bad suburbs in the ACT - just try and keep away from public housing. Those areas are usually dodgy. But thats just my opinion. I would suggest finding the school you want to send your kids to, and then look to live in that area, as most schools dont take kids out of area. I am not a fan of public schooling. Once again thats just my opinion.

I dont have an issue with health care, I went to Canberra hospital a few weeks back, waited 30 mins and was admitted. I have heard some people wait longer. I have been very ill since returning from my trip to RSA last year, and have been to doctors and specialists over the last year. I cannot say bad things about any of them.

As for living in Canberra - its an amazing place to live and raise a family. Good luck.

Hi Lyn. Thanks for the reply. Spent my first day in Canberra yesterday driving around blind...gps was only a back-up and I only used it to get back to my hotel! It was actually great and got see a lot of the city. What was amazing is that I never felt over awed or out of place! It really is a beautiful place and I have only scratched the surface! I went past the HIA yesterday and there are not any kitchen companies displaying there anymore. I will search the net and get some addresses and go and chat to guys today hopefully.

Oh dear, Im sorry to have sent you out of your way - are you sure it was the HIA centre and not the one opposite DFO (direct factory outlet) that you went too ? A lot of people confuse the two. We have a display at the HIA centre so you have me worried now !!!!

Glad you found our little city beautiful. Autumn is lovely in Canberra, but then so is winter and spring.

Good luck with your plans,

No worries! The place I went to was at 28 Collie street, Fyshwick. There kitchen and bathroom hall had 1 x kit upstairs, a few BICs downstairs and a lot of doors, windows etc for building. The guy I chatted to there was very helpful and we had a great chat...so was a good trip still ;-)

Thats the right address. I'm pleased to hear they were helpful.

Sorry Im not more clued up on kitchens, friends that have had kitchens installed have either gone the flat pack way or bought from a company in Sydney.

Hope you find the answers you are seeking.

Welcome to Canberra Rick! I hope you have a fantastic stay. It's not clear whether your business is in the supply of equipment for kitchens and bathrooms or whether you actually do the fitouts. If you're doing fitouts, you'll be in high demand! I work for a design & construct company and we are always struggling to get joinery companies who are actually available. Obviously there's be licences etc to be sorted out on arrival, but I'm sure the MBA (Master Builders Association) would be able to help you out there. There's also a government run crowd on Northbourne Avenue in Dickson who give great advice on opening a business in the ACT.

Check out: http://www.canberrabusinesspoint.com.au/ and maybe go and pop in there for a chat - they're a very helpful bunch.

Good luck!
