OnYellowBrickRd
We are investigating places to stay and I have come across Kingscliff. Apparently it falls inside the Tweed Shire. Has anyone been there? What are your impressions of the area? We are looking for a coastal town but the Gold Coast of QLD is too commercial for our liking. Also think it'll be slightly cooler there than on the Sunshine Coast (where hubby will suffer in the heat). We'd like to live not too far from Brisbane, as the only people we'll know in Australia will be in Brisbane.Any input will be appreciated. (@Bob or Fish, feel free to jump in. I value your opinions)
21yearsoutofrsa
I've stayed in one of the resorts there. It's certainly less manic than the Gold Coast, in fact there is an almost perceptible change once you cross the QLD/NSW border. It's part of NSW so subject to NSW laws, not QLD. You will be close to the Gold Coast shopping prevents, which will be as good as Brisbane's. it's about a 30 minute drive to the Gold Coast central area and about an hour and a bit from central Brisbane.Personally I don't think you will notice the temperature difference. There's not a lot in Kingscliff's town centre, but it will have a Woolworths and a Coles. The primary employer I'm guessing will be tourism, there are quite a few resorts there.
Caz
Recently been to Hastings Point which I understand falls under the Tweed Shire?Lovely laid back tourist atmosphere, very little else.
Vman85
Hi there just thought I'd drop you a reply as I live in Kingscliff and have been here for the past year.Pros: Beutiful area, laid back, affordable accomodation, great to raise kids.Cons: There isnt much work here so expect to travel up to the Gold Coast daily anyway to get to work etcAlso In the time I've been here I havent met any South Africans so if its a south african community you are looking for then the Gold Coast would probably be a better option. Naybe in a quiter area like Tellebudgera or something.I suppose it depends what you are looking for, Although it is beutiful here, I am considering a move to Sydney as more happening there. Fish
Hi OYBR, just wanted to pop in to say I am not ignoring you, just haven't had time...will try soon A bit presumptuous to think you will still care what I say after this wait but thought I would give it a shot anyway in case you get anything out of it Apologies if my post has a tourist slant but that is all I know so it might just give you a feel for the area...I will leave it to people who live in NSW to give specifics of living there as I can only guess. To give you some perspective this is about the southern boundary of normal day trips and short holiday trips people from Brisbane take (very roughly). So we kind of feel we own this bit down to Ballina even though it is in NSW as it is the same distance as Noosa on the Sunshine Coast Northern NSW is a very beautiful area. It is usually very green and I have heard it said that it has very high rainfall though I haven't checked myself. It is backed by Mt Warning and a series of beautiful National Parks that continue across the border and behind the Gold Coast.(Source: http://www.australia...rly-warning.htm)(Source: http://travel.ninems...-hinterland-nsw)(Source: http://www.australia...ie-hall-dam-nsw) Edited November 5, 2012 by Fish
Fish
*generalisation alert*Most of the towns in this region are just little beach towns. When I was a child these places mostly had down to earth beach people with simple pleasures but as the decades have passed parts of the area have gone upmarket attracting big city people. This means the area now contains a mix of the more down to earth and the yuppie hippies and everything in between. As you probably know, the town this has happened to the most is Bryron Bay. It used to be a pretty hippie place when I was a teenager as it served the hippy communities up in the hills around Nimbin. It now attracts celebrities and back packers galore so is far bigger and more commercialised. Still just a beach town though. Fish
Travelling south over the border from Qld to NSW you hit the Tweed. It is famous as a retiree area and still maintains strong links to the Gold Coast being essentially an extension of Coolangatta.Next you have a grouping of three beach towns Kingscliff, Bogangar (aka Cabarita) and Pottsville.Kingscliff is the main town in this three and the property prices have risen the most. It is a nice little place along a shallow river that is great for the little kids to run across. It has a cafe strip across from the beach and the feel of a quiet place that has gone a little upmarket. It seems a nice little place and you would still be within striking distance of the Gold Coast if you needed to commute for a job. The other two towns might be cheaper places due to Kingscliff stealing the limelight in the area. Edited November 5, 2012 by Fish
Fish
Another option is the inland town of Lismore. This is a farming community that has a share of alternative lifestyle people. It has a hospital, a university, a number of schools and feels like a proper little town surrounded by hills.I have friends who left Brisbane and city jobs to raise their children in Lismore and they like it. Fish
Like has been said moving to this region all comes down to jobs, as I'm sure you know. If you have a career that relies on a big city it rules it out unfortunately.
Fish
You may have noticed I have mentioned hippies and alternative lifestylers a lot. A lot of that is due to Nimbin and surrounds. It is a small farming town that hosted the Aquarius Festival in 1973 and then was never the same again. The influence has permanently changed the whole area. One of my friends proposed to his wife in front of me here, and despite this they are still married with 3 kids decades later Edited November 5, 2012 by Fish
Fish
As well as the hippies and drugs there is also a lot of thinking alternative people and interesting ideas and proper businesses. I don't want to imply that you must be alternative to live in Northern NSW, just that alternative lifestyle people are attracted to the area and contribute to many towns. There are still plenty of staid old farmers, surf dudes/beach people and various country folk left as well The hills are hippie, the beach is laid back and the farmers are in between Edited November 5, 2012 by Fish

Fish
FYI, if this area turns out to be too quiet for you or whatever, you could also consider Coffs Harbour a few hours further south, Redcliffe peninsula in Brisbane, Hervey Bay north of the Sunshine Coast and the Newcastle area.
