I find that South Africans consistently overestimate how many South Africans there are anywhere. I think it's because they notice everything South African, they notice the South African shop, they notice everybody with a South African accent, they read forums like this, they possibly socialize with fellow South Africans. They don't notice the British shops, the British accents, don't have Brit friends or family members and don't read pomsinoz. They don't mingle in Pacific Island communities and the like. They don't interact with the more unskilled labour force. Everything they see appears to confirm how many South Africans there are

I had one guy tell me that he thought there were about 400 k South Africans in NZ. That would mean every 10th person was an ex South African, but he was adamant.

I estimated 200 k ex South Africans, so my estimate was a bit off (by quite a lot). It's still gone up by about a third since the last census, which is pretty big in any event. Some ex South Africans may have come over on British or NZ passports, but I suspect not enough to make a big difference.

The only problem with these figures are the thousands of ex-Saffers who have landed here via other countries like the UK. Those people come in as UK migrants and don't show up in the SA stats. Would be very interesting to know how many there are.

Thanks Cristel

I like to see the stats as it puts paid to some of the more ridiculous statements about how many South Africans are in certain areas of Australia.

There are a lot of British people here, I work with one and heaps of them come into our shop, I would say there are more ex Brits than ex south africans

I believe this excludes 457 visa holders of which there are thousands hence the reason why the numbers are lower than what most would expect. WA alone had a 60% growth in number of Saffers from 2006 - 2011. Any migration agent would be able to tell you their stories on how the demand has leaped over the last year as well. Also remember that many Saffer households would have stated that some of their kids were born in Australia which for some of us count as Saffers but technical they are Australians and counted as such.

Anyway, still interesting stats...

I looked at these stats and these are by country of birth, but what I have just looked at there are 1632 Saffers in the ACT not 749

Yeah, I thought 749 sounded a bit low for Canberra.

I dont think this is correct. The census required every single individual in Australia on the 9th August 2011 to complete the census. For the purposes of this census the definition of "Australian" is anyone who has resided in Australia for 12 months or more. The category of visa is irrelevant.

Did any of 457 visa holders on the forum not complete the census?

I have to agree with Jordy, any one who was living in Australia on the night of the 9th August 2011 was included in the survey. So I beleive that the figures are correct.

I posted this elsewhere, although this is probably the right place.

Right, here are the 2011 census stats.

Fist of all if you look at Australia there are 145,683 south africans (0.7% of the population).

Broken down by State;

NSW - 40246 (0.6%)

QLD - 35449 (0.8%)

WA - 35328 (1.6%)

VIC - 24450 (0.5%)

SA - 6208 (0.4%)

I won't bother with the rest. So NSW has the most South Africans, although WA has the greatest percentage by a long shot, no surprice there.

Greater Perth has 30291 (1.8%)

If you break down Greater Perth you get :

Mandurah - 2288 (1.5%)

Perth NE - 2583 (1.2%)

Pertn NW - 13008 (2.7%)

Perth SE - 5723 (1.3%)

Perth SW - 5640 (1.6%)

So this confirms what we know. The South Africans live in the North-western suburbs.

It looks as if the migration further north continues.

Some selected suburbs.

Jindalee - 108 (9.1% South African & 4.2% Afrikaans)

Iluka - 343 (7.5% & 2.5%)

Burns Beach - 114 (7.1% & 2.6%)

Mindarie - 492 (6.6% & 3.3%)

Ocean Reef - 414 (5.1% & 1.7%)

Darch - 281 (4.6% & 2.7%) , this is obviously the attraction of the local private school.

Duncraig - 634 (4.2% & 1.1%)

Hillarys - 434 (4.1% & 1%)

I would be interested to know if you can find higher %'s elsewhere.

Make sense what you're saying. It was just hear-say hence no fact at all.
