Student visa....please advise

Hi everybody

We have been looking at visa applications for a while. Unfortunately it seems that we are short of 10 points for the 136 visa.

I have been thinking of the following option and would appreciate any advise. If I should apply for a student visa to enable me to do my mastersdegree in AUS, my husband is allowed to do any work as long as it is only 20 hours a week.

Could this be a way to move to AUS and then try for 136 later if my husband has AUS work experience. Will 20 hours a week be considered fulltime? He has been involved in residential building projects and I have noticed that there is a lot of work available in construction. Although all jobs advertised require PR...? Will he get a job while I am studying?

Thanks

Hi Bananagirl

This is a good way into Aus, I was contemplating this route a few years ago although I don't know anyone on this forum who has taken it. As you say, both of you can apply for permission to work once you have started your course. However, if you are doing a Masters your hubby will be allowed to work unlimited hours (not restricted to 20) as per DIAC website.

The building industry is BOOOOMing and your hubby shouldn't battle to find work once he has the correct visa label in his passport.

For a change some good news......

Just one question: what did you mean by "your hubby shouldn't battle to find work once he has the correct visa label in his passport."

What is the correct visa label? As spouse to a holder of a student visa, which visa must he apply for to be able to work?

Why didnt you go this route?

Hi Bananagirl

My nephew studied a two year Building managment diploma at TAFE on a student visa an has now received PR.He supported himself as a Building labourer -20 hours per week. This is seen as part-time. Building labourers can earn between $20-$30 per hour.

I dont know if one would be able to find more specialised Building Jobs on a part-time basis.

Please pm me and I will put you in contact with my nephew who is involved in the Construction industry in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Hi BG

Sorry I'm only replying today, but was offline most of yesterday. You and your husband will initially only be allowed to work part-time (no more than 20 hours) Once you are studying your hubby can then apply to work full-time (as you will be studying for a masters) which means that he will get a new visa label. As soon as he has the label he can then legally apply for full-time work.

Cheers
