Banshee
A wonderful Saffa lady, Nadine Myers, who is a immigration job search strategist/managing director, sent me this link on linkedin. I thought I would share it, since it helped me understand the do's and do not's of setting up your resume for the Australian job market. A big thanks to Nadine and I hope it can help someone else. DanieR
I have also dealt with Nadine and what a pleasure it has been! She assisted me with my Oz resume which requires a different angle to what I was used to in SA. She made me realise the value of a good CV and I strongly recommend to all job seekers to invest in something good.Certainly been one of the best investments I have made over here! LisaMcD
I find it's best to make your cv as stream line and simple as possible. The more straight forward and simple your CV is, the better the responses are.

technician
Gday mates i think its best to search the australian gumtree sites for resume writers. there are many HR workers who write cv on the sideline to make extra cash. also you can find a writer who is familiar with your field of work. nab that job did my resume but i dont think they are the best for tradesman type of job. the person who wrote my resume wasnt really familiar with the engineering/workshop process or equipment which did make my resume rather baffling to understand. also they are really pricey.but their overall layout is really proffesional. cheers
AndreaL
A simple straight-forward resume isn't hard to do, we didn't do anything to hubby's CV...............it's the same one he's been using for more than a decade............after all an electrician is an electrician, he's either qualified and lists his experience or isn't.Just keep it to a few pages, no-one wants to read more than that, and the first page is the grabber. You can change key phrases and words to fir the potential employer, but basically a resume needs to say that you can do what you say you can. SAman4Aus
AndreaL, you are correct in some respects but there are some do's and don'ts for any CV especially in Australia..............I have been in IT for over 20 years and have worked as a contractor and permanent employee in Australia for a few years now as an IT Manager. I often review CV's (some South Africans) to recruit project staff and I can tell you a badly presented CV gets binned without getting past the first half of the first page. As an ex Saffer I know that many South Africans in the IT world don't present themselves correctly in their resumes and when you competing against 150 applicants per advertised job, you better make sure your CV stands out!I am happy to advice any IT folks out there that need some inside advice on what the Ausy agents and organisation want to see and don't want to see in a CV.
AndreaL
I also am in a position where we regularly receive resumes and interview people for positions, although not in the I.T field, but in social services............every resume I have looked has been totally different, the fact is that if it is badly written (spelling mistakes don't bode well) and the person is obviously over stating their qualifications/experience, it does not get looked at.We have selection criteria which must be addressed, if they are not the resume is not looked at.One would expect that most people should be able to put forward a presentable resume if they do a little research, terminology is a little different, but if you want a job, you do the research.I agree that resumes have to be industry specific and that a well written, concise resume does stand out. It's really nice of you to offer to help those in the I.T. industry.I know people really stress over resumes, perhaps it is more relevant that it be a certain format for the I.T. industry, but hubby has been offered 3 positions in our time in Australia based on the resume he had.............perhaps we were lucky and already had one that was "Aussie format" comparable. As an aside, I've seen some really dreadful resumes from Australians too. Wannagonow
Its been awhile since this post was last active but...Have there been any major shake -ups in the way resumes/cv's are done from 2013 till now? Just wanting to jump on that plane ASAP and get working that side, so thought I could already start getting the old CV up to scratch! Does anyone have an reputable (cheap ) resume drafters/reviewers they could recommend these days? (particular focus on construction and related short term insurance markets for me please!) . ottg
Firstly a disclaimer that I have no affiliation towards this resume-writing company mentioned below. However I saw the write-up on the Linkedin group "South African Information Technology & Telecommunications Professionals in Australia" and what struck me was the openness and limiting factors mentioned that may prevent employment.http://www.findjobsinoz.com/http://www.sponsoredjobsinaustralia.com/Did anyone used their products with success and will you recommend it? Why?
