Looking for good personnel agencies

Hi all,

I am seeking advice on finding good and willing personnel agencies in Oz who will actively search for employment for me. The only route open to me is to venture down the subclass 457 route with a company sponsored visa. I have been in touch with one agency who is asking 1500 AUS upfront and another 2500 AUS after a successful placement.

I am applying on all the major jobsites for work in Oz, but most of them replied that I need to have a visa in hand before they will even consider my CV.

My wife and myself are planning to go to Melbourne and other cities in Oz during the month of August 2010 or a LSD trip and hopefully have enough interviews secured to land a job. This all seem very daunting and at the moment I am not sure if I will be able to land a job at all? How does one apply for work now already when in fact we will only be in Oz during August 2010.

Are there any others that are planning or have done the same and actually had success in landing a job?

Hennie

Hi Hennie - have you looked at approaching companies directly? They are the ones that will ultimately employ you not an agency (although an agency may well find you a position to interview for) and if it is a big company they probably have all the processes in place to apply for a 457 for you. It is not a problem if you are overseas they can organise a teleconference interview - my sister did that from the UK and got a job in Oz so it can be done. Agencies in Oz tend to specialise in different fields - e.g you get ones that focus on government contracts, or medical appointments so that also makes a difference. I would be reluctant to commit to an agency that demands money upfront because there is no guarantee of them finding you a job and again it is the employer who needs to apply for the 457 visa for you not an agency.

Most companies advertise on their websites job vacancies so what you could do is search for companies that specialise in your type of work, get the names of the larger companies, search for suitable jobs on their sites and apply. I know some people have phoned the companies direct to ask about the job and to get more information which may also help as at least that way it is not as easy to ignore you as it is with a paper CV.

Dont worry about only being in Oz in August - many organisations take a while to advertise, then interview then make a final decision and if they choose you they would understand that you would need time to pack up and move - just like someone from out of state would need time to pack up their life and move.

Good luck with the hunt.

I agree, 3,500.00 AUD = 23,567.67 ZAR

Do these agencies offer a guarentee of your money back should the job not work out?

It sounds like its almost to the point of extortion. you have to pay someone to land a job?

Thats a lot of money to lay out for something that is not even guarenteed...

Just my personal thought..

Hi All,

Thank you for your feedback. We have decided that we would not make use of that agency and rather contact companies directly.

Will keep you all informed on our progress.

You should not pay any agencies to find you a job

Totally agree. I would never even consider paying an agent. That sounds completely dodgy to me!

Hi Hennie, what industry do you work in? It is possible to secure a job (457) whilst still in SA, difficult and fair amount of luck involved but possible!

Hennie, I'm in the same position than you.

Been looking for almost 4 months now, been rejected on almost 20 applications I send out so far....mostly directly to companies, only 2 or 3 I did via recruitment agencies/seek/monster.

I know when I locally put my CV out there my phone starts ringing within 24hours, so I know it's not my skill/CV that is causing the problem. I assume you have the same situation. Anyway, I don't have anything much to add except that I feel your pain and I'm with you on this one....for what it's worth.

If nothing comes of this we might consider Canada to see if our luck change, but our hearts lie in Aus!

Hang in there and keep us updated, it gives guys like me more hope to see others getting their sponsorship :)
