Look en See (Decided already!) trip

Hi. we are planning a 'Look and See holiday' to Oz, hopefully to get out PR visa validated/stamped by then. Only look and see - we've decided a while ago. ;) But we will have to do it cheap - with 2 adults and 3 kiddies, it will be expensive for flying... :holy: We'll fly from Manchester to Melbourne or Adelaide.

I was hoping we could rent a car from Melbourne/Adelaide and then explore regional NSW, Victoria and South Oz, but to keep costs down we want to camp  . Would we be allowed to bring out tents from the UK, with all the strict regulations, or is it better to buy some in Oz when we arrive (a 2men tent and 3 men)? If we have to buy over there, where is best to look for prices online, and which makes are good? We'll have to leave the tents then with somebody in ozzie-land.

They have very good sales on in the UK at the moment, so if we can take the tents from here, we would rather buy here.

Trip won't be very soon, will have to renew our SA passports and start 136 visa process in the mean time......but the planning is nice!

We are a bit nuts - going to spend our last spring/summer/autumn here in caravan, saves thousands of pounds on accommodation, taxes, electricity/gas. So will sell all -- house and all we don't need or not taking over a few months before and put a few things in storage and then move into caravan at a park near our town! gypsies! You can save almost a 1000 pounds a month that way, and that will help a LOT for when in Oz... ;):holy:

Hi Bianca

If you were to arrive with brand new camping equipment, I do not think you would have a problem. You would have to declare it upon arrival, and they will check it, but they are looking for leaves, dirt, etc. and as your stuff is new, they will not find any, so I am pretty sure you will be OK.

Check out this site for Australian camping stuff. http://www.coastshop.com.au/shopping/2camping.htm

Good luck with your plans!

I would check out prices on line, camping gear can be quite cheap in oz if you bring gear preferbally bring it brand new and un opened Quarantine services are neurotic about sand and soils and even go as far to inspect soles of hikeing boots.

Have you considered renting a camper, in oz lots of people while in country simply pull over and camp in bush

On our first trip to Australia we also wanted to do it cheap and brought our own tent from SA. No problems, just check no soil in tent poles. We left the tent pegs at home and all was well. Once we got here we only used the tent once as the backpackers were really reasonably priced and most places we went had families staying as well. You just need to check them out, some cater specifically for youth, those were too noisy and dirty.

You could get a family room, most times with own bathroom, and all of you could stay in the one room at a reasonable cost.

When we immigrated we brought all our own camping equipment with and no problems. Just painted the tent pegs and camping spade, quarantine checked all our camp stuff and all passed, no problems.

You can travel here very cheaply, some backpackers even have good priced dinner meals for those staying in the hostels. Even cheaper than McDonalds...

Bianca - me again! :holy:

If you're bringing new stuff, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. There are great camping facilities available around South Australia, ranging from luxury to free bush camping (no ablutions, though, and you have to dig a hole in the ground :whome: .. hehe). To save yourselves the bother of bringing a whole load of camping gear though, which will eat up your luggage allowance, you're welcome to borrow stuff from us. Just give us a shout closer to the time. We have everything you should need.

Colton is right though, the backpackers are very good here. There are often family rooms available, some even with ensuite facilities. :ilikeit:

We were going the caravan route as well in the last few months before moving from the UK, but in the end we found a little 2 bed holiday rental in a farm barn which cost almost the same. It did save a lot and was a great adventure for all of us! We have very good memories of our last 3 months - it was idyllic :P
