Woden

I'll be arriving in Canberra at the end of January, and I've been scouting into rental properties. It seems that prices in Woden arepretty good, and the properties themselves are at least not unbearable. I was just curious, is there any reason to avoid Woden?

Not that I know of, I have some friends staying in Woden and they are very happy there. Woden has a massive shopping centre there, close to a hospital and it's pretty quick to the city centre.

I live in Pearce, in the Woden Valley, just under Mount Taylor.

Canberrans either live north or the south (of the lake) and they love which ever side they're on !

Woden is an old suburb - meaning established gardens and parks with big trees and lotsa bird life, roos etc.

So if its new you are after, go out a little further, South side is Banks, Gleneagles etc, North side Gunghalin etc. Both these areas have newer looking homes - depends on your taste and if you are a tree hugger or not !!

Every single suburb in the ACT has a big centre close by with everything you will require -

In SA, which direction - N S E W - was a status thing - we dont have that here.

Live in the north (Dunlop in Benconnen) and love every minute of it. It is a new part we are in though and the trees are not that established yet - but it is 5 min walk from the open fileds at the end of town. But enought promotion.

I work in Deakin (very close to Woden - drop myt car at the dealers there and walk to work). It is 25 km and I drive a beautifull country drive at peak hour and it takes me 30 minutes. I often drive around in Woden and must say I think it is nice and it is really close to city centre. Would be a good move.

Seems we may lose another one to the south.

I'm not too bothered about trees, gardens, etc., at least not in the beginning. I just need a place to live for the first few months until I'm properly on my feet again, and I would prefer for it not to be shared accommodation. It doesn't need to be a palace, it is after all only myself, I don't have a family yet, and it seems most of the affordable rental accommodation is located in Woden Valley, so $$$ is pretty much the deciding factor for me at the moment.

WBACT

We landed yesterday back from Canberra to find house and schools. We got both. There is not a lot to choose from and if you see something on the net there is usually story to it, like only available for 6 months, or not there anymore etc. We look at every house on the web of allhomes, and when I mean everyhouse I mean everyhouse. They use very wide angle lenses to that the pictures and the houses we find is very small compare to SA houses.

The thing is simple, there is not much available never mind in finding the right house. Woden Valley iis where we chose to stay as well and very happy with it, though I am bunkrupt now. Houses are VERY expensive. I stay in Centurion, PM me for my cell and I will be glad to give you more information.

Cheers

Hugo

Hi all, Pieter, I was just wondering what the outcome of the Woden yay or nay was? I'm moving to Canberra in the next two weeks and caught in the flurry of finding a place to live! I'm from Sydney so have no idea of Canberra suburbs... Woden looks reasonable but a bit older?? Really looking for a 1-2 bedroom as it's just for me. Any thoughts???

Your best bet for 1 or 2 bed units is close to a town centre. You should try Gungahlin, Belconnen and the Canberra CBD. Although the Canberra CBD will prove more expensive, especially since it's close to the university. They have just finished building a ton of units in Gungahlin and Belconnen, so hopefully you should not have to look too hard.

Is this only in Woden, in Sydney there is a distinct difference between Baulkham Hills Shire area and the Blacktown/Mt Druitt area and Eastern Sydney is considered higher class than the west, the inner west is better than the north west, Pennant Hills is better than Pendle Hills ect People hailing from Liverpool for example sound different than people from the eastern suburbs, maybe I just mingle with the wrong Aussies, but the ones I work and socialise with make fun about the Druitts or snobs from the eastern burbs.

I'll go with what Candice has said, there's a ton of building happening in the North, I eventually settled right in the Gungahlin town center, although I still prefer Woden, all the new developments in the North, although very modern, lacks a certain character, (in my opinion anyway). Driving down Anthony Rolfe you see entire blocks of townhouses, all looking exactly the same, like the were plucked off of an assembly line and stuck in place. You'll definitely find more places available in the North, especially in the size you're looking for, since the South has older areas with bigger buildings. Just be warned though, the demand for housing here far outweighs the supply, and you might end up paying through the nose. Good friends of mine had their brother/brother-in-law visiting for the weekend from Sydney, and he rents a place literally right in the city center of Sydney. Even he couldn't believe what I was paying for rent, and I'm about as far from the city center as you can get in Canberra.
