"Good" and "Not so Good" suburbs in Brisbane

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

For those of you living in Brisbane (I know everyone has a different view on what is good and what is not) can you please offer some advice on areas which are good and the ones to stay away from.

All advice will be greatly appreciated as when we arrive we don't want to rent in a crumby area.

Thanks very very much.

Its All Good.... :ilikeit:

I think it depends more on proximaty to the city and cost of houseing, but I would not drift too far towards Ipswich!!!!! :ilikeit::ilikeit::ilikeit:

Go to www.ourbrisbane.com.au - they have suburb profiles and demographics that should shed some light on it for you.

You will notice that even the best "areas" have the yukky houses and even the worst areas have fantastic houses.

Ipswich has some lovely/great areas!! Have a look at Brassal for one.

I would only stay away from Inala and Woodridge, maybe Moorooka as well.

Brisbane works more on "streets" in a suburb from what I can gather. We live in Aspley which is quite upmarket, but there are som older, crummy areas of Aspley (which is not a big suburb) that I would not consider living in. The same goes for Bridgeman Downs (which is where we want to buy - very nice suburb) - there are parts of that suburb that I 100% would not buy in. So, it depends a little.

Start a list, give us your "short list" and we can comment on the "nicer" of the suburbs .....Brisbane is very vast and diverse !

Cheers

Thanks ! We really like this area (Bridgeman Downs and Albany Creek) and need some property selling karma so that we can buy here !!!! The property market here has not slowed down at all, and it seems that next year it will start to rise again...... so the sooner the better !!!!

Stay away from Zillmere. It is settled by refugees sponsored by the government. many locals told us that. We know people that rented near there and sent children to preschool there unitil they discovered what it was like

I would not even consider Ipswich because of the distance to the city aside from the reputation

Wavell Heights is where we rented, but too expensive to buy. Near great shops Chermside has everything you could want, library, swiming pool and RSL club (good meals and reasonable price)

Bridgeman Downs, Aspley are OK Albany Creek is a smaller suburb but only a few km west from Aspley Wavell etc

Thanks everybody for your advice. Tell me is it really as hard to get a rental as it appears on the forum?

Have a grand weekend.

Jenny,

Australia is nothing like any suburb I have come across in SA.

In SA you have very affluent areas and suburbs and then they filter down from the affluent to the poor squatter areas further and further apart.

Aus is very different there are very few affluent only areas and very few poorer only areas, a lot more like a packet of licorice allsorts.

The good the bad and the ugly all togetther throughout the city's and suburbs, sounds crazy.....but that's the way it is.

Take 10 houses from Zimbali, 10 houses from the Bluff, 10 houses from Umbilo, 10 houses from Phoenix, 10 houses from Hillcrest, etc......mix them all together and multiply by 10 then take that mix and put the mix back all over Durban with smart to shabby and rich to poor all next door to each other in Zimbali, Umbilo, etc......Then you will be close to Australian life style....

Much, much less class conscious......

Remember in Australia Tradesmen are some of the higher earners......

To walk down the street with greasy hands and overalls is not embarrassing, as it is in SA, in australia it is considered a top position, and a mechanic will socialise easily with all class and creed....

You have to loose the stigma attached to class as in SA otherwise you gonna drive yourself nuts trying to work it out.

There are good areas and bad areas in Good suburbs........

There are good areas and bad areas in BAD suburbs.......

What I would say is more important, is to find some area that fills your needs, public transport, tennis club, horse stables, etc

Ipswitch is across the river, about 5 km's max, from Bellbowrie one of the nicest, cleanest and most accessable suburbs I have had the pleasure of staying in, buss service every 10 mins from 06h00 to 22h00, and it also has slightly cheaper rentals than a lot of the other areas as it is about 40 km's from Bribane centre, few people realise you can catch a train, buss and ferry to town.

12 km's down the road is Kenmore, huge South African population, with one of the top 10 schools in QLD, state school nogal.....

Best to go there and find a short term affordable rental and then find your niche, and move to something that fits you better, you'll probably move 2 or 3 times before you are completely sorted.

It is a bit like trying to explain how our taxi's drive on our roads in SA to an Australian....they can NOT understand that there could be 100 un roadworthy cars on the same stretch of road all fighting to get through the robot 20 seconds after the lights turned red....it just doesn't happen in Australia.....so too the housing.....rich live next door to poor and affluent live across from hilbilly and so on....not all over, but in many places.

VIVA Bellbowrie... I agree :blink::unsure::whome:

Hi Dirtbikerider

Thanks for all your advice. I think I like the sound of that :ilikeit:

Can't wait to experience it all myself. Roll on March.

Straying off the subject a bit here, does your user name mean you ride bikes? Motor bikes that is?

Fab!!! Maybe we could get in touch with you when we arrive as Bryan (hubby) has had dirt bikes here (two of which have been stolen) :ilikeit: so he's not replaced them for that very reason.

If you don't mind I'm sure he'd love to do it over there as well.

Hi Hilton

We moved from SA to the UK. Been here for 11 years and moving to Brisbane in March 2010. The bikes were stolen from two different homes here in the UK. The second break in, they totally raided our garage, dirt bike, mini motos, leathers everything BUT get this they left our street bikes (Honda's). The first break in they discovered the chap that broke in was 17 and it was suspected that the second break in was by someone who knew what Bryan had in the garage. Go figure hey!! So after having the two stolen Bryan decided not to get another dirt bike so we stuck to the street bikes. We did, however, sell the Hondas and got Harleys which are, of course, coming with us.

We will definitely be in touch when we arrive. Thanks

Jenny

We live in Chapel Hill - is it very green & beautiful. It is in the western suburbs but very accessable. It takes me 15-20 min to drive to Milton which is on the outskirts of the city. There are many shops in the area Kenmore Village (with Coles) and Kenmore Plaza (with Woolworths). Then there is also Indooroopilly Shopping Centre with Woolworths, Target, K-Mart, Myer and many more.

I would look at Kenmore Hills or Chapel Hill (surrounding areas are Brookfield, Kenmore & Fig Tree Pocket - also very nice).

You can look at http://www.ourbrisbane.com/suburbs/chapel-hill for more info on neighborhoods.

Good luck with your search.

In the South, stay away from Inala and Acacia Ridge. There were also a lot of refugees dumped in Runcorn apparantly.

I love Chapel Hill :ilikeit: ! We are in Indooroopilly and I can recommend all the suburbs that you mentioned as well as Taringa, Toowong, Bardon, Rosalie, Red Hill etc. Surburbs that I really like in the South are Bulimba, Hawthorne and Balmoral, but I know the West much better

Lovies, Pippa! X

I think I like the sound of Chapel Hill...lived in a similar sounding suburb in the US and it was also beautiful and green, will definitely put that on my list of possible areas to look at. Am getting so excited, am really hoping everything works out and we can get to Aus by Jan 2010.

Thanks everyone for their advice regarding suburbs, very interesting!

Our flat is in Kedron, hubby works in Aspley. I've only been here a week, so i don't know all the suburbs that well yet. We are a 5min walk away from the gympie rd busstop, and the bus ride to Westfield in chermside. Lutwyche centrum with great coles and aldi 2 km away. The suburb is also about 7 km away from the city. We love it here sofar!
