Woohoo, some suprising news today when we looked at the bank balance. Seems we have received the stimulus bonus, although I thought we missed the cut off date by a week. So a really pleasant suprise! Thanks Mr Rudd!!!

Enjoy it while you can.

The previous Conservative government, in Australia, paid off all the government debt ($96 billion inherited from the previous Labor government), during its term of office all through the late 1990s and 2000s.

It left this present newly-elected Labor government with a lot of cash in the piggy-bank to throw around.

The previous Conservative government in Australia (governing from 1996 to 2007) also began to build up a "Future Fund" of savings for the baby-boomer generation retiring in the next 10 to 15 years.

This would have had $$$$$ in the kitty to provide on-going health care and welfare for the baby boomers well into their retirement, affording them a good level of services and income (Old Age Pension) in their last few years.

All this is now being spent . . . . to "stimulate" the economy.

During the "good times" of the past few years, the Conservatives ("Liberal Party of Australia") have been shown to be frugal and thrifty in their policies giving this present Labor government a lot of savings to manoevure through the rocks of this financial crisis.

Contrast this with Britian, where I'm living at the moment until November . . . . .

All thro the "good times" of the late 1990s and 2000s, Britain's Labour government have spent all their income, running up a hefty government debt so that now that the financial crisis has hit, there is nothing in the piggy bank.

They now have to turn up the printing presses faster in the Bank of England to print some 75 billion Pounds more

The British government debt will blow out at some hundrds of billions of Pounds Sterling leaving the British taxpayer with very lean government services and cutbacks for years to come.

Thank goodness money grows on trees . . . . . if you believe Labour Party policies and their politicians!

The spending policies of the two governments are in such contrast . . . . . and at the end of the day, British voters will have a far lower level of government services (public health care, education, etc.) than Australians, no matter who is in power to govern them, owing to the big time spending of this current Labour government (1997 to date)

This will be the legacy of 12 years of Labour government compared to 11 years of Conservative government

Think about it next time you vote.

Funny you say this. On TV I saw Labour announced a $50 billion deficit from having lots in the bank a year ago, and in 2 years it will be $200 billion. Before the last election an Australian told us that labour get in, destroy the finaces, then the Coalition get in and fix it, then labour get in ...

The spending could be a good thing but I think rather on infrastructure would be better.

What you doing in Britain Bob? Hope you are enjoying it there
