Hi all, I live in the UK and have converted my SA licence to a UK one, since then I have passed my UK HGV driving test and have a Licence for Rigid Vehicles (i'm a diesel mechanic).

Are they valid in Oz or do I have to do them again

Thanks

Mitch

Hi there,

Welcome to our forum. As far as I know you don't have to redo the test, I have previously answered your question here. For more information you can go look at the RTA's website. You can also contact VicRoads as they keep an up-to-date list of all the recognized countries.

For more info click here. I have had a look for you and the UK is currently listed, I had a Dutch licence and it took me 10 minutes to convert mine.

Hope this helps.

Love

Hi again,

Sorry !! :ilikeit: Yes indeed you are right, all the info is for normal licences. Hmmmm. I have found the handbook for heavy vehicles (click here for more) and have read most of it, but also no info on international acceptance of licences. They do however have a list and short explanation of all the heavy licences (if this is of any use ?). Sorry about that, I am also out of ideas now. If you don't get an answer let me know and I will phone the local helpline and ask them, if you can tell me which of their rigid licences you are interested in ( I assume it will be for WA ?)

Love

You can exchange your UK licence in most States around Australia without a written test needed. Your Heavy Vehicle licence is different however.

In my home State of Sth Australia, you can only swap your car / motor bike licence over. Other heavier classes need a written and / or on-road test, depending on class of licence.

It's the same for me in the UK.

I have driven heavy vehicles up to 62 tons in Australia (Multi articulated vehicle) for 32 years and only qualify to drive a 1 ton van (car licence) in the UK, even though I am qualified to instruct blokes on truck driving up to test standard here in South Australia!

Chow for now.
