Economic crises and jobs/joblesness

Good day all forumites,

I have been pondering and listening to alot of talk about the economic crisses in the world. I think that Australia is no better off in this climate. I read in the citizen again this morning of BHP billeton retrenching thousands of people as they closing down some of there operations. We should have our State sponsorship (victoria)PR visa at any moment. My question is this......Is the time right to leave ...Our town house has been in the market for 4 months...not a single offer or veiwing....Our house will be rented out and our factory.... no better in terms of selling my shares. My veihcle has been advetised...nothing...I heard that in the economic crisis finding a job is rather difficult in OZ as the austrailians have preference...I would do the same in SA. Had I my own company still. Yet I see on SEEK I see many jobs advertised.

Our entry date will be no later than November 2009. How will this impact our children not finishing the school year?

I do sound...and I am pretty frightened at the moment, yet with a little faith I am pushing on.. Anyone else feeling this way?

Alex

Hi Alexix,

Yeah, I know the feeling. We are in the final stages of our visa application and I'm also starting to get second thoughts. Also need to sell couple property and quite worring for me at this stage.

I would suggest phone a couple of recruitment agents specialising in your field and have a chat to them. We did it and they were very helpful!

We too are in the last stages of our visa application. Everything has been sent, Case Officer is now waiting for our Medicals to be sent through to him from Sydney. We were hoping to get our visa and leave by the end of our schools 1st term, but things are taking longer than anticipated. Now with the Global economy we too are having 2nd thoughts as to when we should comeover; when we eventually get our visa. A lady at my work told me her son landed in Perth on Tue 27th Jan and on Wednesday the 28th Jan he went to his new company to meet with them and say hi & he was told they were unfortunately going to retrench him because the was closing. They had employed 12 other people who were also been retrenched. Now he has to find a sponsor or face the realpossibility of been sent home in 28 days time. His container has already left for Oz and his family are meant to be coming over in a weeks time. The Company has said they will pay for his relocation fees & 1 months salary.

Everyday you hear these sorts of scenario's which is very worrying. So is it advisable to rather wait and see how things unfold in the Oz economy before uprooting and arriving in a failing economy and with the strong possibility of no work. We have a son in Gr 11 this year, and a son in Gr 8. We are thinking more and more to wait until our son finishes matric next year and hopefully by then things have settled and the economy world wide will be on the up and then come across.

The flip side is that even in gloomy times there are still opportunities and its whether or not one is willing to take the risk that is the question.

This is something that only you can determine. However, the last thing you want in this volatile times is to extra additional uncertainty. Why don't you consider coming over by yourself and see if you can secure a job. When you done that then bring the rest of the family across into some form of stability.

Many people are loosing there jobs and first in first out. Minimise your risk and test the waters first. But your job skills may be in such hig demand that this is perhaps not an issue.

With all the economic stimilus packages introduced by the Federal Gov this downturn may be over before Nov. Who knows?

Good luck!

Thank your input, at least I am not the only one feeling this way. I am a fitter by trade and could possibly secure a job, problem is we dont have enough rands to live on once there if we do not sell up. When we started out two years ago we would have taken over 1 mil in rands that has now dwindled to a hundred thou or two.....things change quickly...

I honestly don't think that 457 is the way to go at the moment. Because you are basically a temp and you are making it very easy for them to pick you first. I think if you do go over on a PR just do your homework....phone some agencies and see what they say. They know best at this stage...If you might have to relocate somewhere just to start off where there are lots of opportunities for you, that's fine, even if it wasn't your first choice...Our first choice was Brisbane (which is apparantly the choice of the Brits also - read yesterday that the amount of people going over to Aus from UK went up by 30%!), then it changed to Sydney because there were more work opportunities there, and now we're at Canberra because ACT is the only state that can sponsor my husband. One thing I've learned is that they all have their positives and negatives, but at the end of the day the basics are the same. Good schools, good public transport, safe etc etc etc.
