Good picnic spot in Sydney (near city)

Hi

We are trying to organise a picnic for a few friends in a weeks time to celebrate our sons 2nd birthday but as we haven't been here much more than 2 months we don't know of any nice parks. Can anyone recommend a nice park near the centre of Sydney which has toilets and a playpark? Preferably with parking nearby? We are not looking for the park to beat all parks, just somewhere pleasant where the adults can picnic and the kids can play and no one has to worry about how much juice the kiddies drink!

Thanks so much

Hi

I am not a expert on the city but Clontarf Beach is nice and there are nice parks in Turramurra, Wahroonga, Claireville Beach is amazing (northern beaches), Olympic Park has a lovely play area and toilets also. Bicent Park in West Pymble is lovely.

Hope you have some luck and let us know where you go so we can add it to our list.

Shelly Beach in Manly (follow the walkway from the Southern end of Manly Beach - you can take the ferry to Manly, so no driving/parking)

Bradley's Head (Near Tarronga Zoo - you can take the ferry to the Zoo, then follow the path East to Bradleys Head)

DeeWhy Beach - lots of lovely grassed areas & children's playground if you feel like taking the trip - it's worth it.

Botanic Gardens

Then there's also Hyde Park

Hope this helps.

Sydney Olympic park is really really nice for kids - huge play area and a lovely duck pond too. They also have a coffee shop/cafe there - but not that close to the city. Centenial park is also fantastic for kids. You can hire bikes and there is plenty to do - very close to the city.

40 Baskets Beach is great, its near Manly and has swings, toilets that play music and is really quiet.

Fagen Park is stunning although that is near Dural

Definitely Lane Cove National Park if you want to go to the northern part of the city. It's out in nature, but still only a short distance (about 10km) from Sydney CBD. The park has about thirty picnic areas with facilities such as BBQs and toilets. Parking is available near all areas, so you can drive your car right up to where you will have your BBQ and you don't need to carry your stuff far. There are also plenty of activities available, such as bush walking, cycling and even boating (rent kayaks or canoes at Lane Cove Boat Shed, even bikes are available there). But be aware that swimming is not recommended in Lane Cove River. This is mainly due to the submerged trees, which can be dangerous for swimmers. Fishing is also prohibited in the upper part of the river, but ok below the weir. Check the signs.
