My husband have a possible sponsor there and I'm a bit worried living in such a isolated place. Karatha, which is also up that way has been in the news recently. They reported that housing in Karatha is very expensive due to the mining boom. There was a story about campsites being rented out at $200 a week - really rediculous.What a lot of people do is FIFO - fly in fly out. They live somewhere like Perth and work up North for two weeks and then have two weeks off. I work in a hospital in Perth and we have patients from Port Hedland who have to come down this way for serious injuries and conditions. Port Hedland is even close to the ocean! Australia is a great place overall, and even though it is not Utopia, I'm sure you'll find something to love. It might not be the right thing for everyone though. I think it depends on how 'hungry' you are to be here. Or maybe it is just that we were lucky and landed in a wonderful place... I got a few job offers from there and I find that they are pretty open to wage negotiations (I already asked for a raise, LOL), and they offered perks like cars and houses.
