Stranded
Hi All Malbourne'rsHubby came home today with this rumour: Apparently there is No steakhouses in Melbourne! True or false?ThanksStranded
Mara
Hi Stranded, unfortunately, pretty true. There are some that call themselves steakhouses, but by no means are they a comparison to the ones you get in South Africa. I am not saying they are any better or worse, just not the same. There is a Squires Loft in South Yarra and also one in the city, I have never been there, but if you google 'steakhouse melbourne' their details are there. There are also a number of others listed, so perhaps we should endeavour to give them a try!
HansaPlease
Yep, alas, it's true that there are very few. Squires Loft that Mara mentioned is quite nice. I've been to the Goldie Place one in the city a couple of times. Great Steak, and they've even got boerewors, it's a bit different, but it comes close. Their grain fed beef is yuuum. There's also "Hogs Breath Cafe" which is a similar type of concept to Spur in the sense that it's a family steakhouse where you get ribs, steak, etc... There are a few of them around. The good news is that Melbourne does have a lot of choice of food from all over the world, and you can try some things that you've probably never had before. The trick is to read up about places on the internet and in "eating guides" because many places are tucked away in back alleys that us South Africans are programmed not to walk into. You'd never know they were there without hearing about them.

AllisonW
This is sad news! I wonder what the logic for not having steak houses is? Sounds like a great business opportunity. I assume you can get steak at standard resturants?
Mara
Hi AllisonWIt is not that you cannot get steak, or that there are no restaurants that specialise in steaks, but you do not get the type of steakhouses that you got in SA! You know the likes of Mike's Kitchen, Steers, etc.The most affordable chain restaurants in Victoria are probably, La Porchetta's, Sofia's, and TGF Friday's, the first two are both Italian based, serving pizza, pasta, steaks, and schnitzels, the last one serves burgers and steaks! Sam
There is a Meat & wine co on the boulevard walkway next to the Yarra in South Bank. South African owned and South African dishes on the menu. Great food and great vibe!http://www.themeatandwineco.com/http://yourrestaurants.com.au/guide/the_me...e_co_southbank/ Edited September 27, 2008 by Sam

I assume you can get steak at standard resturants?Definitely - you can get steak at just about any restaurant or pub, it's just that they don't have the same sort of steakhouses like they do in SA. It's just a cultural thing I guess. I must admit, it does baffle me a bit because you would think that the cultures are similar enough to have these sorts of places. Dax
Also, try Café Primo, they don't have a large selection of steaks, but what they have is good.I can realy recommend their rump steak (500gr portions) as well as their fried pork ribs - quite good! They have lamb racks and T-Bone steaks as well, but i have not tried it, so I really cannot say anything about the latter.Dax
Stranded
Hi All Melbourne'rsThank you kindly for your responses , so much appreciated. Some of those places, made my mouth water. Going to the Spur quickly! RegardsStranded
Langes
The closest you will get to the Spur is TGIF (Thank God it's Friday) When you look at their menu, you will think you are in Panarottis. But the theme and decor reminds you of Spur. Be careful, most Australian servings are double what you are use 2.
AnitaK
HII am an absolute steak lover and the Squires Loft Steakhouse in the City is better then the South Yarra one and they even have onion rings similar to the Spur. Blue Fire Grill (if memory serves me correct) in Docklands has amazing steaks as well.Enjoy
SpitFire
Also there's quite a few Italian restuarants in and around St Kilda who sell some great Steaks. Go to Le Roche in Ackland St on a thursday for $12 steak, chips and pot of Carlton! You'll probably see me there munching away!
Dan Tanne
Hi all,The Squires Loft is owned by South Africans. I know them well, although I have not eaten there since arriving in Melbourne. (I ate there a few times on previous visit to Australia)As for the meat and wine co, it is fantastic.TGIFridays has been mentioned a bit on this thread. I have been there twice and both times had a shocking meal, and poor service. Was a pity as the TGIFridays that I went to in USA were all brilliant.La Porchetta is average, but very good value for money.
