Hello,

I’m new in Melbourne and have applied online for a Tax File Number (TFN) on Thursday.

Please find below an Australian Tax Office (ATO) web page for applying your TFN online:

https://iar.ato.gov.au/iarweb

You will be asked to enter details including your passport or travel document number, a postal address in Australia where your TFN can be sent, your legal name and other names you use or have used and contact details for yourself or your preferred contact person. The application process will take around 2 to 4 weeks by the ATO.

I also had to complete a Tax File Number Declaration (Form NAT 3092). My understanding is that without a declaration on file, your employer is obligated to deduct the highest marginal tax rate. You can complete the declaration even though you have not received you tax file number yet. You just tick the box that says you have recently applied for a TFN.
