I am considering buying a new GPS and have been looking at the Garmin range. I will most likely be moving by year end. I dont want to buy something now that I will be stuck with at the end of the year and wont be able to really use in OZ.

What is the latest and the standard for Australia? Will it be worth buying now and will I be able to get maps, service, etc easily or should I hang on?

HI Hendie,

They are awesome. We are so fortunate that my hubbies work pre ordered the iphones for all their consultants. My hubby can't wait for his new toy.

Cheers

we have had both navmans and tom tom sat navs.. and for ease of use I would have to say that Tom Tom is better.

I use mine for work .. and it makes life very easy.

You can purchase one over here on sale for around $270.

They have reduced greatly in price over the past year. I too would wait until you get here, as some maps cost

a fair amount to download.

Will then be waiting till we get there. Like the new phone based technology "toy".

I'd say a Garmin or a TomTom will be always the better option when it comes to car nav. Reasons:

1. If the iPhone battery life is 3x greater than the Nokia N95 in GPS mode, then it will still suck.

2. Specs are sketchy, but the iPhone will likely have a much cheaper GPS receiver than the SiRFstar III's you get in the dedicated nav units. The initial acquisition time will suffer, especially if the current almanac is not applicable (which will be most of the time), and the expensive gadget will be useless in many cars which use lead-reinforced windscreens.

3. The maps will very likely be refreshed less often on the iPhone. I also shudder to think what they'd cost, if the N95 is anything to go by.

4. The mounting hardware, with its permanent charger connection, and the strong loudspeakers of the nav units will always be superior.

5. Network-Assisted GPS, the best reason to get a phone with GPS, is still a pipe dream and implementation is probably a few years off, for various reasons that I may not disclose due to conflict of interests :P

I also say hang on!

But only until July 11th!

Tom Tom One

Cape union Mart - R1999-00

Makro - R1899

OZ - $299-00

Tom Tom One XL

Cape union Mart - R2799-00

Makro - R1999-00

OZ - $399-00

Tom Tom Go 720 SADAC

Cape Union Mart - R4499-00

Makro - R4499-00

OZ - $599-00

Groete

Tania

Hi weereens,

Groetnis

At the Macro in Roodepoort, Hendrik Potgieter Ave, you can get a Garmin Nuvi 310 for R2000 and they normally go for about R4000. I know you are asking about the Tom Tom but I think this deal is awesome....

Cheers

Got a navman here in Melbourne, was resistent at first with me being quite conservative and all and prefering a map book. Been hugely impressed with the device, works really well. Cost was $349 with a $50 cashback which I received via cheque 45 days later.

lekker by die see,

Jimmi

I'd suggest you wait till you get here. I've been told you'll have to hoes en betaal for the Aussie maps, almost as much as you'd have to pay for the GPS unit itself.. not sure how true that is? Also, apparently all the new models with the new maps will be coming out in the next few months, so if you have a bad case of versionitis, hang on till you get here

Ek sou wag indien ek jy is.

Actually Assisted-GPS exists on certain phones already, such as 6110 Navigators and N95's with the latest firmware. The way it works is that the GPS receiver in the phone sends all signals back to the cellular network. The network knows in which cell (routing area) the subscriber is located, and what to expect from the satellite signal in that area in terms of which constellation should be receivable, current corrections to apply, etc (the GPS satellites move at a heck of a speed). The network then assists the phone in getting a quick fix - in the order of few seconds in theory. The network also has the benefit of receiving multiple requests, which helps reconstruct the signal better. The signal from the GPS satellites is so low that it's below the thermal (atomic) noise, and has to be superimposed over and over numerous times until it starts passing its checksums.

So far so good, except A-GPS is not implemented on the network side yet. All the major vendors (Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens Networks, Huawei, Nortel) have had various trials and tests, and the standard is agreed on, so hopefully there will be something next year. Until then, mobiles with GPS-receivers will be inferior to dedicated navigation units, which have more expensive and sensitive GPS receivers.

Coincidentally, the currently available network-based location-based services are accurate to about 550 metres for GSM (triangulation is based on timing advance from serving cell, plus signal levels from top neighbours), and uselessly inaccurate for UMTS (no TA information there).

Thanks for all the advice, which has helped me made a decision. I currently have the Garmin Quest 2 which is a real beauty. I use it for driving, hiking and mountain biking. The other day I enquired about the Australian mapset which costs a whooping R5600. Do I buy do I sell?

If Im reading correctly I sell my unit here in SA before we leave in Sept and buy a new unit and mapset once there?
