Vegetarian food

Hi all,

My husband is a vegetarian. In SA we have a great product range - Fry's, which make soya sausages, burger patties etc. Is there any vegetarian soya products in Oz?

Any veggies out there who can guide me? Any good veggie resturants in Brisbane?

Thanks

Al

Hi Allison

I am vegetarian too, there is a range of veg food called sanitarium but I don't like it, I campaigned Woolworths for a year to stock the Fry's range in W.A and finally they have, but only the schnitzel, sausage and burgers.

You get a few other products, a fair bit of tofu plain marinated etc.

I will be moving to Queensland soon and hope that there will be more vege choice there.

I will check my mail for the Australian supplier of Fry's and give you their details, if you get here and can't source them at least you have a contact to find out your closest outlet.

Man I would kill for a fried veg polony on lettuce with mustard and mayo!

Hi again

I say if you eat the stuff you will need to go to the sanitarium to recover, although they do a burger called " not burger" that isn't too bad, once you have had Fry's though you can't go back.

There don't seem to be a lot of vegetarians in Western Australia, one of the reasons I am pushing the Fry's range is that Woolworths will only continue to stock it if they have enough sales, if they have good sales we may be able to push for the entire range to be rolled out in Oz.

The contact for Fry's range in Australia is

Ah! So i see that you have the same family dynamic. Hubby is veggie and i am not. But i dont eat a lot of meat and eat his veggie meals most days. I will send them an email and check whether they supply in Queensland. Fry's are great and the whole family will eat them. Kids dont even realise that they are not eating meat. Their schnitizels are great - you can now cook them in the toaster for a couple of minutes - so no added fat and they are crispy and so easy.

We can return to our SA struggle roots and lobby. I was wondering what the veggie scene was like. There are some great vegan resturants here in JHB and Hubby is on the mailing list for some of them. They do great buffets and are really good food - Called Earth2 and also Roots.

Thanks

Hi Allison

The following websites may have more info on dining out and veg food suppliers.

www.vegsoc.org.au

www.happycow.net

www.vegdining.com

www.vegetarian-restaurants.net

Are you planning to settle in Queensland?

We hope to move to a small town called Moranbah, around 200km from Mackay, I will probably be " the only vegetarian in the village"

Yes, we are planning to settle in Brisbane. Hope that there will be some fellow hippies around? In your experience are there many vegetarians in Oz?

Hope they dont get out the pitchforks (or their steak knifes!!LOL) for you!
