Job Offer as Electrician

Hi All

Hubby did skype interview yesterday and we have an offer.

He has a positive Electrician: Special Class TRA assessment and will need to get licenced once there.

How do we know if he has been given a "fair" offer? We are a bit hesitant as the offer was in the Inbox about 10 minutes after the interview finished, which is very quick...

This is the first job he applied for online too, so we are VERY inexperienced. Only decided to look at 457 options since the 175's seem to be taking forever....

For all we know there is an abundance of work for his skills in Brissie and if we just feel the waters for a couple more weeks we might end up with a much better offer ... or not.

Any advice...

Maybe electricians on that side may be able to give to some idea of the going rates etc. Unfortunately I live in Perth and I am under the impression that we have higher rates over here than Brisbane. Also, do take into consideration that when you are still in SA you may have to take a lesser offer as employers with better jobs usually take the local workers of other employers.

Hi Kerry-Lea

Well you could possibly wait for a better offer - however must tell you that my hubby has been applying online for over a year now (for all positions electrician / technician / instrumentation related), and has yet to even get an interview from one of these applications. Yes there is an abundance of work out there, but not all employers are willing to wait and sponsor for the 457. The typical reply is 'thank you for your application...however please contact us when you arrive in the country.....bla bla bla....not sponsoring visa's at this time"! I read your post with the thought of "some have all the luck...!" - almost too good to be true.

My advice would be to research whether the offer is a good one or not, rather than waiting for a better one to come along, without knowing whether it's a good one in the first place. Just a thought - but then we haven't had much luck here.

If you don't mind me asking - to whom / through which recruitment agency did he apply?

Good luck on the decision, I'm sure it's not an easy one, especially since you already have a 175 in the queue.

All the best

Sorry Pixel - forgot - www.workforcesolutions.com.au, is the agency we are working through.

Frankly I think we're just lucky as hubby as a "strange" history of experience and it just so happens that this funny mix is exactly what this company is looking for - so a perfect match for a strange job and odd set of requirements.

He is not an electrican as in household, but heavy current "special class" lekkie.

Would love to have more comments from the rest of you. We have big decisions to make and fast, so would love to hear your opinions, good or bad...

I would say anything below $5000.00 per month is a NO NO!. Someone on the forum said a while ago that if you earn that and more you should be allright. Would also like to know the anwser as my hubby is also a electrician and still need to LOOK!

It is lower - goes up a bit when he gets his QLD licence but still not by much.

I suppose what I'm asking is whetehr we should use it as a way in, bird in the hand kinda thing...

Thanks Kerry-Lea,

Will send them a mail and give it a shot. My hubby also has a strange mix of experience - studied heavy current and has worked in a variety of electrical related jobs - electrician, electrical technician, instrumentation, etc. Don't know if that's why we have yet to find the right position for him, but were turned down on his Special Class Electrician skill assessment with TRA (they classed him as a General Electronic Engineering Technician - twice!!) despite his employer reference stating almost word for word the ASCO description of a Special Class Electrician. Went for the General Class Electrician through Vetassess instead, which came back positive.

Oh well, I guess it all comes down to timing - the right place/job at the right time.

Congrats on the offer, and good luck with everything should you guys decide to take accept it.

Regards

Thanks Pixel

General consensus seems to indicate its a good offer considering he still needs to be licenced, and we are seeing it as a means to an end, so looks like some serious discussions on the cards tonight.

$5000/month is roughly $32/ hour. You’ll probably find it a little hard getting that without a license and still being in SA. If you have a license and you are in Australia you should be able to get that.

Hi Kerry-Lea

I don't think you would be making a mistake. The one time my hubby almost received an offer it all came to a dead end because he was not yet licenced.

Though we can't make the decision for you, what I CAN tell you is that if we were in your shoes right now, we'd be jumping for joy. All you need is a way in....

General Electricians in QLD aren't earning $32 p/hour. So holding out for that is a long shot I think. My one son is doing an electrical apprenticeship and so I have a rough idea of what general electricians earn. Maybe I'm wrong though? My advice...check out the company on the net, are they big or small, do they have a history that you could check on, how many in the company, etc, etc. My hubby is in HV electrical and has worked with the same company since we got here 2 years ago. He is a specialist in his field so earns way more than General Electricians but as an appy my son is earning $29 p/h and the qualified sparkies above him aren't earning much more. Hubby deals with a lot of the other electrical companies around and would be able to tell you if the company was worth while if you wanted to PM me the name. His office is also based in Brisbane and they are looking for guys with HV experience. Their office already has more South Africans than locals. One good plus is that electricians are in big demand here so if he wasn't happy with the company I am sure he would be able to find another sponsor.
