Some of my photos here - http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=5123...mp;id=529626284

The climb was tougher than I thought, the first 20 minutes is very steep, about 45 degrees gradient, so you need to be in a reasonably good physical condition. The 1.6km hike to the summit at 346m above ground level took me 30 minutes. Carried a backpack with water and camera equipment though and held up by older Japanese people (they are everywhere!) along the way. Going down can be tricky, especially with a cross-wind.

Don’t ever attempt this in summer – the desert heat and flies will kill you!

Best times are April/May and Sept/Oct.

Some of the European backpackers I met in Alice Springs (500km north of Ayers Rock), spent the summer there and told me it was often 46 degrees during the day with a minimum of 32 degrees at night! In-friggin-sane...

For those interested in the details, here are a few guidelines:

- Fly Qantas from Sydney to Alice Springs (3 hours, about $250)

- sleep over in Alice (arrange own accomodation)

- Do a 3-day trip with www.therocktour.com.au at $295 p/p

- Visit Kings Canyon, Kata Tjuta and Ayers Rock

- you sleep in sleeping bags and swags for 2 nights under the stars (about 5 degrees at night)

- no toilets and showers, 1st night only - so don't bother if you don't like camping... ;)

- fly back from Ayers Rock to Sydney (3 hours, about $250)

so total expenses about $900 - $1000 including spending money on snacks, beer, etc.

Great trip, I can highly recommend it!
